There are bad people everywhere, Danno. Contrary to what happens in the Catholic Church, however, in the public education system, teachers tend not to get supported and their crimes against the kids not covered up by the chain of command. Offending teachers tend to get fired, prosecuted and jailed. Nowhere is the support system for pedophiles so developed as it is in the Catholic Church.

I can't say I disagree with you on that point.

I have read into this topic quite a bit and it seems there were two forces which brought this about.

1. THe liberalizing of the Clergy post Vatican 11, there were even seminaries which would reject any candidate which believed Catholic teaching on Homosexuality, abortion etc. and so

far off the moral track that gay sex parties were the norm at these so called places of religious instruction. (The "pink Palace" being just one.)

2. At the top of church hierarchy , were those trying to preserve, their reputations and or the Church its self.

THese two combined for an implosion beyond what anyone could have imagined.

It might suck but in this country, people are still innocent until proven guilty - for the most part. Hence, teachers may not get fired until they're proven guilty. But if the allegations trigger an investigation by the police and the case works it's way through the courts, such teacher is not being put in front of the kids.

Once the Pope and his Catholic Church has figured out how to protect little boys from their pastors I'll consider listening to what he feels the ills of humanity are. An organization endangering and abusing children and then engaging in massive cover-ups of the rapes and molestations that occur(ed) on their premises and by their pastors certainly doesn't promote the "future of humanity".

They have implemented policies now that hopefully will prevent future cases of abuse.

When I was in junior high, we learned about the contributions of homosexuals. It was controversial for a couple of the kids in my class and their parents pulled them out of class. These same kids were also pulled out during sex ed as well, so YMMV.

It's long been my belief that Public funds should not be used to teach on any controversial issue which has no academic merit... especially when the "opt-out" provision is not available.

So you would be completely against intelligent design or creationism being taught in a public school?

Danno, the difference is, I can accept that you and other religious folks have a right to believe in that sort of stuff. You on the otherhand want to supress anything and everything Gay. You don't even support equal civil rights for gay people. See the difference? I am intolerant towards religion and don't want it being taught as it has no academic or scientific merit. You want to repress the rights of fellow American citizens, simply because they are at odds with your religion.

From what I have seen, that is not true. When I was taught in school about gays, we were first taught about it as an abstract concept. Nothing specific, just generalities about how some peoples parents were different from our own, and that was not better or worse, only different. That was in 4th or 5th grade I believe. When I was older, 7th or 8th grade, when they start to teach you more about the specifics and mechanics of sex, that part was omitted. Never once was it taught (to me at least) with the connotation that religion is bad, gay people are great.

It isn't training Danno, it's teaching, informing. Just because you object to the subject matter doesn't mean that it is brainwashing, or "training" as you put it. It's sad that you would prefer hatred be allowed to fester, rather than inform people about gay people.

I would advocate keeping it out of public schools because it is counter productive. The point of science is to search for answers, the point of religious based science, like creationism is to seek a truth that fits within the parameters of your religious beliefs, with no regard for scientific method or merit. That has no business being taught as a scientific discipline. But you are free to teach your kids at home this if you like.

You seem to like to quantify levels of bigotry Danno. I will admit that I don't have much respect for religion, I see it as anathema to progress. But unlike you, I am not trying to repress people's civil rights, purely because of religion. I wouldn't try to supress your rights to practice whatever religion you want. It is you, who is trying to force your beliefs upon everyone else, in the form of teaching pseudo-sciences like creationism in schools. You should take a look at your own bigotry first danno. Your hatred of gays, and any minority seems to have clouded your ability to rationaly argue.

As far as teaching equality and that gay people are equal to straight people in class, you can thank yourself, and your ilk for that. It's people like you, who preach that gay people are inferior because they don't conform to your morality that has instilled a cultural inequality over the years. It will take a while to undue the bigotry and racism that people like you have instilled in children. You are free to teach your kids to do whatever they want to do in your own home, but preaching hate and racism is not acceptable at schools, or other public areas.

AS for the Pope expressing the conclusion that Gay Marriage, threatens the future of humanity, this is no new observation, societies have long viewed Homosexuality as a -social weed.... if you will.

kept in check it is tolerable, allowed to flourish, it soon chokes out those fruitful plants.

Of course when you ask the question -Where in history are these societies which held homosexual life as equally moral as

man-woman relations.... where are they that we might look back know where we are going and what it will be like?

Wow, this is the most depressing Politics & Religion forum I've ever visited. It's a real eye opener that people are still so paranoid and homophobic... Makes me real glad that I grew up in Canada, where gay marriage was legalized in 2005 and has been one of the most progressive countries when it comes to human rights.

I half expect someone to start a thread in support of female genital mutilation by the looks of the kinds of the kinds of racist, homophobic and sexist stuff that gets posted here.
