ESTA/VWP question...

I went to visit my partner for a couple of weeks back in November on the ESTA/VWP scheme. I didn't get anything in my passport when I arrived other than a tiny stamp with 90 days validity.

My main question is that when I left, should I have done anything? I didn't have any paperwork to give in - nobody even checked my paperwork on leaving the US. I'm just worried that it was far simpler to leave than it was to enter and that maybe I missed a step when leaving? I'm just fretting now that it might cause me problems on my next upcoming visit?

Thanks in advance,

The one thing you may need to take with you the next time you visit will be evidence of ties to the UK (or your current location), especially if you have already started the K1 process. Basically you may need to show that you are going to go back home at the end of your visit to your partner in the USA.

When I visited last time I went armed with loads of documentation; rental agreement, letter from my company and evidence of funds, but POE took bout 2 minutes whilst he took my prints and a picture. He asked me why I was visiting and how long for. I told him I was visiting my girlfriend and he gave me 3 months. I asked if he wanted to look at my evidence and he said that he was satisfied that I was of no concern to him. He also asked if I could help him learn British English after he found out that I was an English teacher in our chat.

I was also surprised as I went to Libya last year and some other countries that I thought would peak the interest of the officer but he just glanced at the visas and asked where I would go after Moscow!

I'm pretty sure now that CBP employ some kind of profiling in their procedures as I assumed that he would NEED to look at my evidence rather than choose not to?

They may ask you more detailed questions if you say you are now visiting your fiancee. Just be prepared.

In my experience, it depends purely on the individual officer on the day. I told him I was coming to visit my Husband and he just asked a few random questions about how we met (Internet) and how long we've known one another (6yrs)and seemed satisfied I was returning to the UK.

Put your mind at rest. You did everything right. The officer must be satisfied with your paper-work and intent of visit. Just be prepared to answer questions truthfully the next time you visit your partner, cos after second cosecutive visit they become more suspicious of intent to stay! If your current relationship grows and you would like to settle in us permanently, explore the easier routes. Other than that. You are good at POE. Best of luck. smile.gif
