Hello,

forgive me for being a bit off topic here, but I am in the process of a K-1 Visa to my fiance in the Philippines. For over a year, I have sent her money via Xoom. Then, for no apparent reason, I got an email from them telling me that my account has been terminated for violating the terms of use. I called them, and they would only tell me that the decision was final. I requested a reason for doing so, and received no answer. As I am in need to continue to send money, what other affordable means of sending money is there from the US to the Philippines?

thanks for your help.

Have you used any coupons or special offers recently? Seems Xoom is cracking down, asking websites not to list the coupon codes.

[/quote I do not think I used any coupons. I simply got an email stating that I did not abide by the terms of use. I have done nothing but send my fiance money. When I ask them what I have done wrong, they will not give me an answer.

I had the exact situation occur. Now I tried to "trick" the system and use a different originating bank account and I still get denied. Very frustrating! I hate paying $25 to use W. Union!

I hate everything about WU! MoneyGram only charges $9 - $11.00, at least that's the charge when sending from Wal-Mart. M.Lhuillier has an agreement with MG and the money can be picked up from most locations.

I select the dollar option for pick-up in the Philippines to save money on the difference in the peso/dollar exchange rate. MG sets an exchange rate lower than the market rate and pockets the difference when you elect to have your party pick-up pesos.

I use WU, mainly because it is so simple to use, and I am in Afghanistan. So I can either go to the local base store or go online. I usually go online, due to there being such a long line there almost all the time. They do have moneygram here but it is in the Afghan bank on base, and they are hardly ever open. I kept trying to use the online option, and it kept getting rejected. So I said screw it. I hate WU online though. Because unlike if I send it in the store which is like a $15 charge every $1000. When I send $1000, I have to pay a $82 charge, so it really sucks.

But I found out about whole currency situation. How they pocket the difference, which is usually about a 1.5php difference per dollar. Which btw does add up.

I just ordered a credit card the other day for myself but I had them send me another card with my future wife's name on it and they did it within no time.

Maybe you can get a credit card with a low limit and just send your fiancee the card and pay the bill for her?

I know I sent at least 10-12 transfers of money to my fiancee over 5 months and it does add up so I am glad she will be here within 3 weeks.

Also, if I had to do it over again, I would get her a bank acccount and just get all the banking numbers and transfer it directly to her account from my bank account.

With Western Union and Xoom, you are paying for convienence but with a little work, you can cut them out.

If you do transfer money with WU or Xoom, have them pay out in American dollars. My fiancee warned me about them shaving when you pay out in the native currency.

If you live in an area of the U.S. where there is a Wells Fargo (I think that's most areas), you can set up bank transfers. This is what I've been doing for years living in the Philippines. It's very simple, easy, and I think the least expensive.

First, I had to have someone on the Philippine side open an account at BPI (Bank of Philippine Islands). Then, I went to Wells Fargo in the U.S. and filled out some paperwork to attach my WF account to the BPI account in the Philippines. After arriving in the Philippines, I had my wife's name added to the BPI account so we had control of it. From there, I just initiate transfers from my Wells Fargo account online any time I need to. Wells Fargo allows you to transfer up to $3,000 a day for $5 per transaction. They automatically convert it to Pesos at the going rate, and a couple days later the money is available for withdrawal using my BPI ATM card. I've checked around and I have yet to find an easier and more cost effective way to move money over here. It's takes a little leg work to set up, but once done, it's pretty slick.

Hope this helps!

That beats the $9.00-$11.00 cost to use MoneyGram and a trip to WalMart, hands down.

I almost forgot-here's a link with more info on this service. Apparently Wells Fargo now has two options-$5 fee if you send money from a WF account, $7 if you send cash. Still not a bad deal even without a WF account.
