Nothing....because it is not your responsibility...and if you mean trying to paint an innaccurate picture of the situation in an attempt to fool the VOs...think about this....even the newest VO has been given hours of instruction on the typical fraud being prepetrated in the PI....doctoring up bank accounts, etc, will backfire...and besides.... a bank account can be emptied 5 minutes after visa issuance...money in a bank does not act as a strong tie to one's country....sadly, since about 98% of single Filipinas who come to the US wind up married moments after collecting their baggage, your GF will face incredible scrutiny and the VO will wonder why she is in the 2%.....any input from you would only make it worse, not better.

How do you decide whether or not to issue a visa? What does 214(b) mean?

For business and tourist visas (B-1/B-2), each applicant must qualify under section 214(b) of the U.S. Immigration and Nationality Act (INA), which states:

"Every alien shall be presumed to be an immigrant until he establishes to the satisfaction of the officer, at the time of the application for a visa . . . that he is entitled to nonimmigrant status . . .”

Essentially, the visa officer is looking to see that the applicant has compelling reasons to return to the Philippines. By law, the burden of proof is on the applicant to show that he or she qualifies for the visa. This proof may come in many forms, but when considered together, it must be strong enough for the interviewing officer to conclude that one’s ties to the Philippines will bring him/her back at the end of a temporary stay in the United States.

What do you mean by "ties to the Philippines?"

"Ties" are the aspects of one’s life that bind him/her to his/her place of residence, including family relationships, employment and possessions. In the case of younger applicants, who may not have had an opportunity to establish such ties, interviewing officers may look at educational status, grades, the situation of parents, and an applicant's long-range plans and prospects in the Philippines. As each person's situation is different, there is no set answer as to what constitutes adequate ties.

Wally - thanks for posting that - the info at the US Consulates in China is very similar.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

It's not about having connections somehow. It is exactly as advertised--strong ties such as a well established, long term, good paying job, home ownership, healthy well established bank account, etc.

My wife worked in a professional office setting with a large corporation as did many of her friends. Many of them have received tourist visas, while her sister who is not as established and is self employed cannot get one.

Yeah, she'd need excessively strong tie to the Philippines as she's in the prime age to marry a USC and adjust in country if she is issued a B Class Visa so her ties home need to overcome this assumption.

I was a junior in college when I applied for my tourist visa (with my dad). I had no savings or whatsoever at that time. Consul just asked for my school ID & I was approved for a 10-yr B2 visa. I just had to emphasize that i was going to the US for a visit and come back to finish my studies.

Did you?

for others in a situation similar to your's, the chances are slim to none.

That would have been about what 10 years ago?

What was you're Dad's situations? I'm assuming he was able to demonstrate strong ties to get approved. Maybe you're approval was kind of piggybacked onto his. You know they figured since he had the strong ties and you were traveling with him that you weren't likely to stay behind when he returned.

12 to be exact. As far as i can remember, consul just asked for his IBP ID and reason why we want to go to the US. Like i said, we got lucky.
