Going to the office to get the marriage certificate would take me a month and delays the process. My wife has the original marriage certificate but we can not send it as VJ told us that the original st USCIS not necessary. In addition, USCIS did not ask us to send original. My wife read quitely the letter for me, they just told us to send legible copy of the french marriage certificate ( Original version ). I told my wife to go to an office to make color copies of the marriage certificate ( french version ) and send it back to them, as it was the only thing they wanted from us. They run through our documents and only send us a RFE for " legible" copy. I feel an approval is on the way right after we resubmit the requested document. My wife will send it this afternoon i expect then to approve us in 10 days as we requested an expedite

Gotcha - a good colour copy will hopefully clear things up for them. If they sent back the translation you originally submitted, I assume she'll send that back as well again?

Yes definitely, she will send them back as well and will staple the copy of the marriage certificate ( french version ) with the copy of the translated version

I hate to say "I told you" but... I told you

Their call center is kind of pointless.

Anyway, I'm sure everything will start moving for you when they receive your new docs.

If I were you, I would get another original marriage certificate in Haïti, before leaving for the US, just in case. You might always need one of these for something.

I'm lucky here, I can have new originals by going to the city hall which is just a 5 min walk away. I have like 10 copies, in the two different formats they make.

They will give me the license of the marriage certificate in February. So i will get it and bring it to the interview with me!

I afraid not get the same problem, my wife will send the original Marriage Certificate to USCIS

Not true. At USCIS stage, you do not need originals or certified copy. A regular copy is fine.

What I would do Rujby is: make a new, clear and legible copy of the original certificate in French. Staple the English translation to it, together with the form saying that the translation is accurate. Send it back.

I don't really understand what happened here, unless the copy of the original in French is really illegible.

My friend, i want to avoid the same problem, i will have my wife sent the original marriage Certificate to USCIS. What do you think? by the way, they did not send any document back to my wife, only the letter they sent to her. That is a good news!!!

Greetings,

My wife just receive the notice about our RFE in the mail a short minutes ago. It was about our marriage certificate that they request a translation into english. What we do not understand is that we submitted the original version ( french ) and the translation into english of the marriage certificate and also a certification of the place that says they are competent to translate documentation into english and that our document is correct regarding the translation. Could you please help me understand what happened? i do not really see what else we can do

My best guess is that you sent a copy and translation of the wrong document. First, maker sure the French version is a certified copy, obtained from the appropriate government agency AFTER that agency registers your marriage. Then get that document translated and send a copy of both the French and English document.

If you want accurate responses, you must give us accurate information. DO NOT send the original marriage certificate to USCIS. It is needed later at the NVC stage. First make sure that what you are calling an ORIGINAL is actually a certified copy. If it's your actual original marriage certificate then it is NOT a certified copy of a government issued document.

WHat happen if i sent the original marriage certificate? The copy of the marriage certificate ( french version ) was not legible. USCIS did not send it back to us. They only send a letter stating that our copy of marriage certificate ( french version ) was not legible. To avoid the same scenario, i was thinking about sending the original. I have a friend of mine currently in the US, he left haiti last spetember, he went to the same process, i called him and he told me that he did not send to USCIS copy of the marriage certificate but the original.

Again, do not send the original. If, in fact, the French version is an actual certified copy, then make certain the photocopy of the certified copy is legible this time. A quality color copy is usually legible.

OK, that makes things more clear: they just lost it!!

Send the color copy toghether with the translation and translator's statement, but I insist, do NOT send an original. You'll need it later, and if it takes more than a month to get it from the authorities in Haiti, you'll slow yourself down at NVC stage.

Reason for not sending them originals: they LOSE things, as you just experienced it.

I don not think they lost the copy of the marriage certificate ( french version ), they say is not not legible. They just ask us to resend another copy which is more legible. That is why today, my wife going to make a color copy of our marriage certificate ( french version ). we do not need to resubmit the english translation and the statement as the letter clearly says that they want " copy of the marriage certificate in its original language"

NO! NO! NO!. Do NOT send the original certified copy. If you use a quality color copier and the copy is still not legible then the original is simply not legible. If the original IS legible then a quality copy will be to. Find a place to SCAN and email the original.

NO! NO! NO!. Do NOT send the original certified copy. UNLESS YOU INTEND TO REPLACE IT.

NO! NO! NO!. Do NOT hope USCIS will forward the original to NVC. They will, but NVC will want another one anyway.
