Hello, All,

Thank you so much for a wonderful website and all the help you provide for others. It's about the right time for me to apply for K-1 based citizenship and I have a question regarding this statement:

Have lived within the state, or USCIS district with jurisdiction over the applicant’s place of residence, for at least 3 months prior to the date of filing the application

So my Hub and I just came back from a new Year's trip abroad. I potentially could have started filing on the 1st of January (2y9m prior to 3 years). So with all the other requirements met, do I need to wait for another three months to apply if I was abroad? We have lived under the jurisdiction of our current office for more than a year. I would greatly appreciate any input, thank you!!

"Have lived within the state, or USCIS district with jurisdiction over the applicant’s place of residence, for at least 3 months prior to the date of filing the application"

Has nothing to do with taking a short trip, more like your permanent address has been for at least three months. As if you moved to a new city, even though you have met all other residency requirements, that act of moving adds another three months to the earliest date you can apply.

Doesn't make any sense because the USCIS is a federal agency, not a state agency, but maybe nobody told them that.

I am sorry, I have another question here, I can't seem to find it via search. If I apply after 2y9m but before 3 ys since I've become a permanent resident, which date should I use as a starter when answering the question about absence/presence - the day I am filing the papers or the day I first became a resident? Thank you so much in advance, again!

Hello, again! I am sorry but I have two more questions concerning the form N400 and I would be happy if you could share your experience.

1. Part 6 - where have you lived in the last 5/3 years

Part 7 - time outside the US (trips)

Am I getting it right that in the part 6 you put down all the residence addresses in the US and prior to coming to the US OR does it mean I should include all the addresses I traveled to in the last 3 years? That just doesn't make any sense to me because I would mention all of my trips outside the US in Part 7?

2. I found out on this site that you should count the days outside the US without including the day of departure and the day of arrival (partial days in the US). We made a trip to Canada for a weekend - left Friday, arrived Saturday. So what do I put down in the "total number of days outside the US" - 0?? I just don't quite get it.

Please, help me with sorting this out. Thank you so much in advance!

1. Part 6 is for US residence addresses, you do not put addresses you have traveled to (those are temporary trips/stays out of US). You are applying based on marriage, so put all US addresses you lived for the last three years (minus 90 days if you apply 90 days early).

2. If you left Friday and arrived on Saturday, was that trip longer than 24 hours? If yes, you need to count it as 1 day out of the US. Say you left on Friday at 1pm and arrived on Saturday at 12pm. So you do not write that trip in that list since it was not more than 24 hours. But if it was more than 24 hours, say you left on Friday at 8pm and returned on Saturday at 11pm, write it down and count it as 1 day out of US.
