  1. 1. Would you say the #1 area to cut spending is within our defense budget? The absolute very first place to look and slash 10s, maybe even 100s of billions?

Look at it this way; an F-35A pilot could zip to a spot at any altitude without being seen, fire her weapons, then zip to the next spot. With an A-10, the troops would have to fight off the enemy waiting for the pilot to arrive. Then it would shoot the enemy while being shot at, and it can't climb to avoid the fire, because it would attract more fire.

have you ever seen the a-10 in actual combat conditions? i have (desert shield/storm) and whatever it's shooting at is not firing back as it's taken by surprised and destroyed in a matter of seconds. if the crew of whatever it is after does see the a-10 before it opens fire, it's quite often azzhole over elbows by the crew getting out of the area.

the primary weapons used to engage the a-10 are light/heavy machine guns and light ada. it's designed to take hits from those.

I carry a gun because a cop is too heavy.

Largely so, though aid from aircraft like F-22s, MC-12s, and UAVs would help.

F-22 is not a close air support airframe.

MC-12 is not a close air support airframe. (And is a prop-driven slow litte... I thought you didn't want planes shot out of the sky by SAMs?)

UAVs, while capable of doing close air support are nowhere near as effective as the A-10. Not even close.

I recommend you do a little more research before designing video games. And by research I don't mean reading facts and figures, I mean talking to actual combat veterans who've deployed the resources against the enemy.

Anyone who's seen it first-hand would probably argue it should stay in inventory indefinitely.

Something about 30mm DU on demand is beautiful.

It was engineered around the gun. The gun was not added to the plane.

Hmmmm.

I have never been in the service or combat. I can't help but to feel sorry for those crews.

I think we're talking past each other. The F-22 and MC-12 can help gain air superiority, not CAS. The F-35 would be more fun than an A-10 in a game, because you can do more with it kicking.gif.

We agree that the A-10 is important, and should not be cancelled. The F-35 trades off weapons for speed and stealth; that should work for some missions, but not all.

One can hang around a lot longer than the other. You waste a lot of fuel zipping around at mach 1.5.

B-)

plus having all that speed means it won't make as many passes as the a-10 could in the same amount of time. i've seen them turn 180 degrees in just a few seconds.

In theory the apache can do the A-10's job, but only in good weather conditions.

But, they don't need zoomies to fly them. Apache's can also fire their 16 Hellfire missiles without exposing themselves to enemy fire. Handy to have around when you are not sure exactly when that next enemy column is going to show up, as they can shut-down just outside the kill zone until you need them. With support aircraft, they can fly all-weather.
