So if he's working for the US government don't we have a duty to extract him?

You're basically saying cops deserve to be shot in the line of duty. Soldiers blown up. Nurses get AIDS.

Think about your position. Seriously. Here's a guy working for us. For all of us. Yet you're saying, "So what?"

It is as if the US could interfere with the decision without risking all out war.

It is a bad move to send him over there

I can completely understand why at age 28, Amir, the son of Iranian immigrants, would want to have an extended visit to his parents' home country.

Aaron, when you visited Vietnam, did you also have U.S security clearance and training in military intelligence? Did you hang out near military complexes while visiting? Now add to this the political tension between Iran and Israel and the U.S. and the fact that the Iranians just recently shot a U.S. spy drone out of the sky, and you can compare apples with apples.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

This man is an American. He is being held by a hostile government. He deserves and is entitled to have his government help him. Period.

That's it. There is no, "Well, we have to consider the circumstances of his capture and the situation and... "

Yes, of course we should. But only AFTER we decide to get this guy out. We can get him out via diplomatic means but there should be that plan of action if diplomacy fails.

No American, anywhere in the world, should be left to die at the hands of a foreign regime.

If you work as a plumber, you'll have to assume that at some point you'll have #### on your hand.

If you work as a firefighter, you'll have to assume that at some point you may get hurt on the job.

If you work as a soldier, you'll have to assume the risk that at some point you'll get shot.

If you work as a spy, you'll have to assume the risk that at some point you'll get captured.

There's the assumption that something could happen. But there's also the assumption that the government has your back.

It is as if the US could interfere with the decision without risking all out war.

They didn't shoot down anything. The spy drone "malfunctioned."

Are you sure this guy had all that training and did all that stuff? There's a lot of circumstantial evidence in this case.

I don't know the exact nature of Amir's involvement with the military and CIA. So, I am not commenting on that. I am not commenting if it is smart for a person with all the connections you cited visiting a hostile country. I was commenting on Slim's statement that "who visits grandma for 4 months?"

For the children of immigrants, I can understand the drive to visit their parents' home country for an extended period of time. It is not uncommon in my circle of friends who are children of immigrants to travel back to the home country for an extended period of time to learn about their ancestral culture and sort out any cultural identity issues they may have.

This dude was a contractor for the US military. I doubt he had any identity issues.

That's what I was wondering. So far the story is he went to visit grandma.

And Bill Clinton did not have sexual relations with that woman!

If we catch an Iranian spy sniffing around our military bases, and he is put in front of a court of law, and is convicted of espionage and about to be shipped out to Guantanamo Bay, I don't think there's any justification for Iran to send us their military to "get him out." We are a sovereign nation of laws, and somebody who violates these laws has to face the consequences.

If you agree with me, switch Iran and U.S. and you have your answer.
