I'm starting to apply for jobs... would an employer know or care what a GCSE is?

Should I just go ahead and get my GED or would they check that I have passed GCSEs... Are they going to phone my old high school? ;)

In my time of job hunting they care if you have a GED but from what I gathered they didn't look into it nor did they ever call any of my reference contacts from Canada. Though I was applying for all types of retail jobs and really anything that was available for min wage. If you are applying for very specific jobs that are for target sectors / high up type jobs then i'm sure they will look into all the past info and jobs you had.

I could hit the GED button on an application and say I have one and they may not check?

The job I am looking at right now is very low pay but just need something right now to pay my way through EMT school. (the job is delivering food trays to people in hospital). I'm sure they just care if I can read and write.

I just asked the wife - she told me no-one has ever asked to see her High school diploma.. ever.

Yep pretty much lol... Most of what they seemed to care about in the interviews was if i was dressed nicely ( not in Pjamas or slobby ) if I talked like a 'sane' person and had good habits, made eye contact etc ( on time to work - willing to help others etc ).

We ask for a copy of the high school diploma at my place of employment. And we are one of the largest employers in the area.

My husband works at the same place. We just copied all his certificates and handed them to them. I'm sure they were too dazzled by the big stack to even begin to question his level of education.

I wouldn't take this tactic with a high level job in the states. But for anything where all that's required is a GED, I wouldn't bother with having the credentials translated to the US equivalent.

Thanks RJ.

I missed out on a lot of schooling in the UK due to various factors, and I intend on persuing a career here instead. I just need a "joe" job to earn some money to put myself through school - like most college kids here in the US do :)

I figure I can speak and write English to a high level and I am obviously a nice person ;) and am capable of handling myself in a professional manner, they shouldn't care. Plus for janitorial jobs or similar it doesn't really matter.

I'm legal to work that's probably all they care about.

You'll want to check what the education credentials will be for the EMT training you are interested in.

When my husband trained as a Certified Nursing Assistant, they required a GED for entrance. Once again they accepted his certificates from his O's, his HND, his OND and his NVQ without requiring a "translation" of the foreign credentials. I doubt they really had a clue what the credentials were, but we were comfortable that they more than equaled a US GED.

Look into what will be required for you to enter your selected training. You may or may not have to translate your credentials - or you might have to sit for a US GED. Or - you might not! Just check it out so you don't get surprised.

Yeah, most of the EMT classes I have seen require a GED or HSD. I'll do my GED anyway as its pretty cheap.

Got an interview with Autozone on Monday... hmm. $9/hr selling stuff to people that don't need it but I suppose its better than working at Kwik Fit ;)

I had great GCSE's but after a year of no one understanding what they were (I even tried to resort to putting High School graduate on my CV) I did my GED and passed with flying colours. Your local adult education center usually does free courses/classes to get you prepared for the exam. Good luck.

If you have a degree, doing a GED is a waste of time. A degree from a UK university will always carry more weight than a GED, since a GED is a high school diploma equivalent.
