I actually lost weight since I got here. I was down with flu for a week just a couple of months after my arrival. That's when I lost about 8-9 pounds and haven't been able to gain it back because I cannot enjoy the fatty, tasteless food here... I was skinny before, but even more so now  . I went back to Romania for 8 days last Fall and I actually managed to enjoy my meals and gain 2-3 pounds...but I would not be surprised if I lost it again now.

In Ireland, as elsewhere, the exact constituents of a full breakfast vary, depending on geographical area, personal taste and cultural affiliation. Traditionally, the most common ingredients are bacon rashers, sausages, fried eggs, white pudding, black pudding, toast and sliced tomato.[4] Sauteed mushrooms and fried tomato are also sometimes included,[5] as well as baked beans, liver (although popularity has declined in recent years), and brown soda bread.[citation needed] A full Irish breakfast may be accompanied by a strong Irish breakfast tea such as Barry's Tea, Lyons Tea, or Bewley's breakfast blend served with milk. Fried potato bread potato farl, boxty or toast is often served as an alternative to brown soda bread.

Stole that from wikipedia.

Hmm...maybe I will get a breakfast in Dublin the next time I fly Aer Lingus. BTW what is potato farl or boxty?

Aside from during my pregnancy, I didn't gain weight in the US. I, as most people, definitely can't say the food was sooo good. Thankfully, I'm the one who cooks so I could make sure I bought quality incredients and we usually only ate out at Sushi bars and our favorite Chinese place in CA. However, now that we've been back in Germany for a year, I've gained WAY too much weight already... enjoying all the good stuff I had missed in the States, lol.

I just found a german restaurant near our place in Maine. I don't know what to try first because everything sounds good. I think I would be in trouble if we went to Germany!

Define 'Decent breakfast'.....

'Cause if it includes; pancakes (drenched in syrup to hide their rankness), 'bacon' (fatty, stringy, shite), and scrambled (destroyed) eggs, that one can get in I-Hop... then your definition of a 'decent breakfast' is warped.

Also, Iced coffee... I disagree with it.

We prefer a "Continental Breakfast." Small portion of toast, cereal, glass of OJ, and coffee and your off.

Not sure what continent it is from, but ya sure can't put on the pounds eating it!

Continental Europe. For some reason they don't seem to like the delicious British/Irish fry-up!

Ask my wife !!!

When in America she always gains. When she goes home she loses. She is back in Russia now and reminds me that she will lose weight.

I claim this type if diet is too expensive

Okay, people it's to easy to blame the USA for your fatness. When you should be the ones to blame, there is something here called a doggy bag and we have microwaves that magically heat up the food in about a min or 2. Also in the USA they have refrigerators that don't require ice to keep your food cold and fresh.

In regards to meat having growth harmonies or antibiotics. You know that the word organic in meat means? Grass feed beef is also an alternative. Try places like whole foods market or heb or maybe a farmers market.

I've been around the world and believe me there are fat people everywhere, for goodness when I was in the Netherlands I had butter on everything, yes uk breakfast is a heart attack waiting to happen, also the same with your curries. In the middle east meat hangs outside in the open market, I'm sure there is nothing like the USDA there. Plus I would eat us beef over uk, maybe mad cow will jog your memory.

Yes we all gain weight in the land of plenty.

Less opportunities and/or need to walk places is one of the biggest problems with gaining weight in the US. When we moved from London to LA we quickly learned we couldn't eat the same without making a bigger effort for exercise. London is simply a more physical city to get around, so you can eat more ####### and not worry as much about piling on the lbs. Here, you need to be far more aware of what you are taking in and what you are burning off.

Is everyone having the same problem as me eating way too much? The food here is just too good and the portion sizes are enough to feed a whole family. On top of that my wife makes some really delicious meals and the best apple pie in America.

I've managed to put on 40lbs in less than 2 years! :crying:

You've started quite a discussion!

I moved to Vermont. I miss walking so much in everyday life, you have to drive here. The food is better in the US in my opinion (I've traveled to 22 States so far), simply because there is more variety. But I do miss some things from home.

I am fitter and slimmer since I moved here, and I was slim before I moved here. I have adopted the lifestyle here in Vermont of eating well and exercising...which I did not do in the UK! :) I do yoga and exercise classes with my colleagues and my workplace offers incentives to exercise and provides good, healthy food. (I work in a public high school) When I was waiting for my AOS I found a free yoga class and went for walks.

I've noticed that it is far easier to get healthy food here. I admit that is not the case in all parts of all states. When my husband moved to Scotland he put on about 30lbs. All those chippy's and pies. :) We eat a lot of 'stodge' in Scotland and spend too much time in the pub :)

But as another poster said...it doesn't matter where you are, if you eat too much and don't exercise, you'll put on weight! It's that simple.

Been here 6 months and lost 6 lbs so far. My husband has lost about 8. And it's primarily because we are happy to be together and eating more healthily.

We are walking and exercising more, avoid eating too much fast food, and when we do, order smaller portions (when possible I order child's portions!). It also helps that we both like to cook and have planted a vegetable garden. We avoid processed food, never try the samples at costco, :innocent: and try not to put junk food in the shopping cart. It also helps that California is a great place to be for the great variety of fruits and veggies available, almost the whole year 'round.
