I never had a reason to make a CV/Resume while I was still living in the UK for various reasons, one of which is that I was an independent contractor and took on jobs at will and not for an employer.

They didn't care if I had a resume or not, they based the work given to me on the basis of a job well done.

Are there any tools out there to help me make a resume? I have no idea where to start. In the UK I could've gone to a "Job Centre" and they'd have helped me. What is available here in the US?

Any clues?

There are companies that will make a resume for you and they make you sound really impressive and it will cost about 500 dollars-just google it

Also there are online templates

http://office.microsoft.com/en-us/templates/CT010144894.aspx#ai:TC102002999|

Also in Indiana there should be a place that offers interview skills (usually at government place like public aid) and they can help you for free---best option.

Good Luck

Some of the schools around us in NE offer resume writing classes. Use google and check around your state see if any schools offer the classes etc - they are pretty help full!

If not you can find example resumes online and some job sites like monster.com offer ones where you can make a resume on their site. Our state also has a website for help finding jobs and it has information to help you write your resumes and tips etc on the website - check google see if your state has something similar they should.

Applying for 5 and get 2 interviews is awesome! I must have submitted 40 to get a 2 phone interviews and 1 face to face.

Background checks are simple. They are used to verify information you put on the application. You can do it to yourself and see what comes up for $50.

Temp agencies are everywhere. I have used Apple One and Man Power before.

Sorry.. wrong thrad above..

Don't pay for writing resumes. They make money on people that are starting out and aren't making money. They are scams! What they do is simple and should not be worth $500 unless the job you want is $$$.

I would search online for resumes of other people for a good format to copy. Search for people with your skills and in the same industry. Then you search online job databases such as monster and hotjobs for positions you are looking for. This is to get keywords and know what they are looking for to put in your resume. Always use action words such as managed, designed, and implemented.

you could use Linkedin and Careerbuilder, etc as references for making resumes. MS Office has a lot of templates to choose from too and all you need is fill out the info.

the format i use is this

First name Last name

email address | phone number | address

PERSONAL SUMMARY

basically a summary of your experiences, skills, interests

EXPERIENCES (from most current job)

JOB TITLE (start date - end date)

Company, Address

job description (bullet form is easier to read)

SKILL SET/Certifications

EDUCATION

just keep it simple, about 1-2 pages. you can make different resumes that are tailored for different positions you may want to apply for, highlighting the skills that may be necessary for that job. if you post your resume online with the "magic" keywords, a lot of companies will be interested in you and notice your resume.

It's easy. Just type "free resume examples" and "free resume cover letters" in Google and they all just pop up. Choose one that you like and feel comfortable with and use it as a template. That's how I've always done it and it's never failed me.

Well I got an interview with Autozone on Monday. They probably don't really care about my resume as long as I can:

speak and write English.

not steal.

be there on time.

snitch on other employees.

I also happen to know a little bit about cars since I fix mine up all the time :( LOL.
