For DR members, I need your help.

I had my husband get his passport BEFORE we were married since I figured he should get it out of the way asap since we would need it in the long run. There is no fine print on the passport where it says he is single vs married, but he claims all of this info can be obtained from the bar code on the passport. My mother in law also keeps INSISTING that he will have to get another passport and pay all the fees again because he had gotten the passport he has now while he was single.

Personally I don´t think it matters, is it really a big deal? Will he really have to pay again to get a whole new one even though there is no fine print on the passport with his status. I would like to figure this out before I leave DR in a couple of days. I know people are gonna say just get a new one to be sure, but its expensive to get a new passport and I hate doing unnecessary things, so only answers from people who know what they are talking about. Thanks!!

I think the thing that matters is the name on the passport. That's what they're looking at, not his single or married status. Plus, at POE he will have the additional packet from the embassy explaining everything. I believe it is not a problem; however, I am not certain. Keep the old one.

I've never heard of the IR-1/CR-1 process caring at ALL whether the beneficiary's passport was obtained before they were married. The consulate may very well care that the passport remains valid until at least 6 months after the issue date of the visa, but I would be VERY surprised if the consulate cares in the slightest whether or not the beneficiary's passport was issued before the beneficiary was married.

The Embassy will not care when the passport was obtained, only that it is valid for travel to the US. Obtaining another one will be completely unnecessary.

It does not matter at all about the marital status on the passport. Only the name and other bio info being accurate is important.

If that's even something they look for at all, as long as the passport issue date is earlier than your wedding, you can sleep safe and sound. Save the money.

I advice that if you can update the passport, dont let them have any excuse otherwise it will be alot of tension and waste of time later if they make any ojections. TC

Hey steph, my husband was told at the passport place that the maritual status on passports are only put for women, men are put as single always. You know these machista countries...lol!
