This is specifically for the people in Peru. I'm ready to do the DCF and file the I-130. As my spouse and I are physically in Peru, how do I go getting a "US Bank drawn check or money order"? What did you people do? I could have my parents that are back in the states send a check to me via DHL but that would take some time and is not real reliable in my opinion. Any suggestions?

It used to be until a couple of years ago I believe, that the major banks (Continental, Credito) who have correspondent bank status with US banks and could provide a check/money order against a US bank. Of course, fees and some other things would apply. I'd try and check on that. At same time, I'd also call the Embassy in Lima and ask them what to do.

Banks are open today in Lima and you can stop by a branch though most branch personnel might not know about this specific matter, you might need to do it at the main office or at least a big branch in San Isidro (where most have their big offices), they would likely know since there are many businesses there.

I have a good contact in there within the bank industry and we talk frequently, so I can ask as well next time we talk, but that would be several days.

Thanks for the input. I use BBVA Continental here in Peru and have seen BBVA banks in the US but didn't know if it is actually the same banks. Guess I will have the Mrs go ask the bank.

Okay, just talked to the bank here in Peru. They said they are a different branch than the US bank and cannot make a check "drawn" on a US bank. I need an answer from somebody here in Peru and how they handled it.

Same bank, but they are not yet 'interconnected', they might be able to cut you a money order against BBVA-Compass (the US one)

If I get in touch with my contact there I'll ask and pass the info...but don't wait on me...could take several days before that happens. I know there is a way as I go to Peru quite often and have made 'impossible' arrangements with some creativity of the local bank staff there. Had never done a money order or something in the lines of what you need though; but have often pay for services with personal checks (from Bank of America) and people there never had a problem cashing them (last time was last November, 6-7 weeks ago). Not the same of course, but there must be a way, if anything, your original idea of having your parents send a check.

I would seriously reccommend that you call the Embassy in Lima or go walk-in during citizen hours and ask them what's required. On the USCIS website it says "Please check with the consulate before submitting a petition. For more information, see the U.S. Department of State website." The instructions for submitting the I-130 will be different depending on the consulate. I have a strong feeling you will be told to make a payment to the Embassy at a Peruvian bank and provide a voucher, but that's just what I'm thinking.

We paid in cash for all steps during DCF in Lima, but that was in 2010. It may be different now.

Did they send you to Banco de la Nación to pay there & bring a voucher to the embassy? That's how they charge the visa fees there. That's why I was assuming this is what they'd have him do.

No. When filing the I-130, we went up to the window in the consular services section, a couple windows from where we handed in the I-130 packet, and presented the amount in US dollar bills. Same as for the interview.

Cool, that's much easier. One less trip.

Out of curiosity, where did you get this information about needing the check to file in Lima? Have you already gone to the window hours there to find out their filing guidelines and heard it from them?

I called the consulate number and the person who answered the phone gave me that information. I wasn't quite convinced and that is why I posted the question.

I'm 2 1/2 hours South of Lima so I cannot get to the embassy and go ask at the window. I would if I could.

When you file, you'll have to do that by going to the window hours.
