Who said poverty only effects Blacks?

PLease read what I write without assuming I mean something else.

90% of Black children will be on food stamps at sometime....... are you that out of touch with the Black community that you only know those 10% of children who will never use food stamps?

91% of single headed house hold will also use food stamps.

Black illegitimacy rate is in the 70% now.

Put this puzzle together and you will see it has everything to do with family structure.

Again, I am not attacking Black people for the color of their skin..... I am attacking what has become known as Black Culture.

It is destructive first to the Blacks, secondly to the society at large.

Sadly this culture is something new and I suspect the cradle of it has been -Those who have benefited from it, from without and within.

A great American Booker T Washington wrote about some, quite starkly.

“There is another class of coloured people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs – partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays. Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs.”

To you both, I can point out white ccommunities, Asian communites, latino ommunities etc whom has the same issues. These issues are not just Black culture. These issues are economic issues.

To the poster who assume that those who are driving 30,000 cars are dealing drugs, again you are making an assumption. They maybe paying the high car, that's why they are living in a cheap apartment.

Again your facts are out of date.

Do you live in Jefferson, Mississippi? There maybe more whites there who receives govt aid than Blacks. Trying looking up the stats on whites receiving govt aid in the same county in Mississippi you maybe surprise.

Because if the median income is only 23,000, than I an sure everyone regardless of their race is being subjected to this same median income.

Maybe my reading comprehension isn't that good? My math is fine though. You are saying that of the 1200 white's that are there compared to the 6500 blacks...that there's more white recipients of some type of assistance totaling the 21 million in assistance?

Being a Black person, I say this is a bunch of BULl SHYTH. How many Blacks do you know are being taken care of by the govt. Personally, I don't know of any.

I live in the largest Black county in the US, so no I am not out of touch, it's you'll that read and aceppt only whats put in print. I have seen proverty in All races, so proverty doesn't just affect Blacks.

The community that I live in the average income is $50,000 and everyone owns their home. You need to get out more, maybe you will see the truth.

Based on my own personal experiences that I see on a daily basis I can tell you poverty disproportionately affects black people. As Danno and others have pointed out, it's a problem that's worsening as government dependence grows.

I'm happy for you that you live in a nice community and own your own home. I have none of those things (and I'm white) so you are correct that race is not the determining factor alone in poverty or wealth. But, you're ignoring the facts that clearly show certain percentages of people live on government assistance.

There are more white people on welfare than black people. Way more. But, proportionally speaking, relatively few white people are on welfare. Compare and contrast that to blacks and there are a relatively high number on some type of assistance.

When someone like the former speaker attempts to address that issue, he's branded a racist. When someone like Al Sharpton brings it up... he's a hero.

You've stated you make close to the medium household income (M.H.I. was $50,000 in 2009) so you'd easily be approved for a $100,000 mortgage (over 30 years) which includes insurance and property taxes.

This assumes you have a middle score of 610 or higher (which is really a pathetic score to have as the cutoff).

Cons: You are locked in for 30 years, can be a really bad thing if your home value tanks (but houses are at rock bottom prices so that will not happen).

Pros: Your 'rent' will absolutely plummet (I bought a nice little corner home, 3 bedrooms, 1.5 baths, 2.5 car garage, laundry room, living room, deck, for $20,000 - my mortgage is $300 a month with taxes/insurance)...That is so cheap...I did have to dump about $10,000 into fixing it up..Still paying off the Home Depot store card...Not just paying rent, it is actually yours....You can use your home to get loans later on in life....etc.

To give you an idea my wife was the person on the loan and she made $10 an hour working part time and was approved WITH EASE! Her tax returns showed about $17,000 earned in a year...She was pre-approved for a HUD property (BIG GOV OWNED) up to $60,000....And to top it off, they are giving priority to first-time home buyers meaning the bids are closed off to investors who otherwise would have outbid us...She was only in the country for 1.5 years when she was approved.....Crazy to think of how many McDonald's (part-time) workers could own their own homes with a crummy score like 610 while earning minimum wage...

Look up HUD homes in your area....The prices are mind blowing

Most blacks would imply over 50% and that's definitely not true on a day to day basis. However, it can't be ignored that a disproportionately large amount of black people (especially in urban areas and throughout the south) live solely on government assistance. That is what the former speaker was addressing. How can we improve that? He was offering help in combating the reality of that situation.

Reality hit him though because a white man is not allowed to talk about black issues unless he sugarcoats them or talks in roundabout generalizations. He failed to do so. Black men can do it all day long (and they're not racist) but a white guy even makes a quip about it (in a positive sense, no less) and he's branded a racist.

Proof this problem will never be solved because many people (most on government assistance "FREE MONEY!!!") don't want it to be solved. Once it's solved, there's no more free money. And that will cost everyone!

Go 15 miles outside of Detroit (in certain directions) and you are in million dollar neighborhoods.

This is pretty ridiculous for $79,000 on a 5 minute search. And this is a fantastic area by me.

Over 2100 square feet....High ceilings, big spacious rooms...2 full baths....Been on the market for a while so you could probably offer $15,000 less than the asking and get it....

Not all of us want to move away from our neighborhoods.

Part of the overall problem with our major metro areas is the urbanization of people moving out so they can "get away" from the problems of their city. In doing so, they take the majority of the wealth with them and government subsidized poverty fills the void.

In order for us to clean up our cities we (people of all colors) must demand less government intrusion and hold ourselves accountable for financially sound policies. We have to stop living beyond our means and only doing what we can afford. If you have no job you can't have more kids!

You're right. It doesn't just affect blacks but it affects that community - as well as the Hispanic community - disproportionately. That's all that is being said here. Now, you can deny that, of course, but the fact still remains. The poverty rate among the black and Hispanic population is almost three times that of whites and more than twice that of Asians. These are the stats. Try and argue them away. Good Luck!

You're right. Most blacks actually live above the "poverty" level. Some 70%+. That still leaves more than one out of four not making that cut. One out of four. Think about that. I think that's disastrous. Especially since it is becoming ever more difficult in this country for those born into poverty to find a way to break out of it.
