Hi!!

I have a silly question. I got married, and went to change my name and get my SS. I got my SS, and according to it I have 2 first names and 1 last name (the guy at the SS said I could come back and change it to have a1 first name, 1 middle name and 1 last name next time, because the system would only allow him this time to write it as 2 first names, NO middle name, and 1 last name). So, if I leave it as it is, when filling for AOS, should I put None, N/a, or just leave the space blank for Middle name???

Thanks a lot.

I am not really sure why the SS office could not put your name correctly. They have the ability to input a correct name. How was your name listed on your visa? Was he saying that was the way it matched up in the database so he had to input it that way? How is your married name supposed to be? Maybe he just did not understand how to use the software.

When you file for AOS, you need to put your name exactly as you want it on your green card. It is best if your name matches on your immigration papers, SS card and legal IDs. I think you might want to go back to the SSA and ask about having your name done correctly.

Hi!

Thanks for your response! Well my name in all the k1 papers and everything before I got married was 1 first name, 1 middle name, 2 last names. It really didn't make sense to me. He only said the system wont let him change it to 1 first name and 1 middle name, but that I could come back and change it once I had the number. Then he made a joke about me going from 2 last names to 2 first names. He was really nice the whole time, so I don't know. Anyway, I think I will go today and change it.

I was legally able to change my name to my husband's first paternal last name, which is the cultural norm and how I wanted it, BUT I live in Florida and their stupid laws at the DMV due to the Real ID mess would not allow me to have just his paternal family name. It had to match exactly to our marriage license and he listed both his last names on the license, so I had to go back to the SSA and change my name all over again, this time just adding the 2nd last name. The lady I got didn't work on the cards, she did disability claims and was not familiar with the software. At first she could not get my name changed and kept saying it won't fit, but then she asked a co-worker and he showed her what she needed to input and what button to click and check boxes to tick and all that, and ta da! it worked just fine and she could change it. That is why I said maybe the guy did not know the software or something.

I hope they get it straightened out for you. Let us know how it went.

Due to marriage, you are going from 2 last names to 1, and I went from 1 last name to 2 :P
