Do I just make sure I have copies for my records or do they want 2 copies of everything when I send it in?

IMPORTANT!

Make TWO copies of the entire package before you send it in. This includes the money orders too. You want to have a perfect replica of the package you are sending in. All Forms that you submit must be originals with original signatures. Supporting Evidence that you submit may be photocopies. Retain ALL original supporting Evidence since the USCIS has the right to check them by issuing an RFE (Request For Evidence). If you receive an RFE, follow the direction exactly, and make two copies of what you sent back. During any future interviews the USCIS may also want to examine the original supporting evidence.

The copies of the entire AOS package are for your own record/personal use. Keeping originals of what you have submitted in copies(passport, birth cert. etc) is more or less required since they may ask to see the originals.

Hi there

I'm guessing that the quote about making two copies comes from the VJ guides for preparing the petition for the K1? The point of having two copies (as far as I understood it) was so that the petitioner and beneficiary would both have a copy when required. As you're both now in the same location and filing to adjust status, I would suggest that only one complete copy is required for you so you know exactly what you sent in for your own peace of mind in case you get any queries from USCIS regarding your application. Some of the documentation needed for I485, I131 and I765 is the same, so check that you've added all the documents needed for each application separately as they get split once they're received from USCIS (there are some really good links to what to include on VJ, as you'd expect...I used this one http://www.visajourney.com/forums/topic/235331-aos-ead-ap-from-k1-the-aussie-way-doc-list-included/.
