Congrats on the interview date! That's pretty fast!!! Make sure when she studies the questions that she gets the latest info...there are 3 or 4 on currently elected officials...for example "Who is the current speaker of the house?", etc.

Most likely, you won't be able to attend her interview and will have to wait in the waiting area...but I'd plan to go along anyway. In our case, the interview took maybe 15-20 minutes and they scheduled her oath ceremony for the same day...so it's best to be prepared for anything. You can try to find out what the normal process looks like in your area...in some places you can get same-day oath ceremonies...in others there can be a month or two wait.

We're working on bringing the babushka (MIL) here as well. Man, I really hate the California USCIS service center...they are always so slow. We're already over the official 5 month waiting period at this point. I'm guessing you'll be at the Vermont service center though.

Grats on nearing the end of one visa journey and the start of the next one!

05/22/12: Interview passed!

"Bahbushka" is the transliterated pronunciation of the Russian word for "grandmother", meaning Alla's mother. Due to her age and general declining health we are considering bringing her here to live with us. Once Alla is a citizen she can file an I-130 for her mother. Her mother is not likely to have much to say about it.

Since Russian uses a different alphabet, there really is no such word as "bahbushka" it is using our alphabet to reproduce the sound of the word in Russian, so no translator is going to work with that

Poor babushka! (that word does the trick in the Latin alphabet, VS Cyrillic alphabet), have you ever considered that dying alone is not fun for sure, but sometimes old people, the last thing they want is to be taken away from their roots..it kills them even more inside.

So if you have love and respect for her, maybe you should consider what she would prefer, and not what 'gary and alla' want.

apparently as you said 9 we are thinking...) Alla, your wife, should talk to her to know what is on her mind...

Who is Bahbushka?huh.gif. Google Translate couldn't get me the answer.tongue.gif

You must type in the phonetic spelling and hit the space bar for Google to insert the Russian word. For example type in privet (space) and it will change to привет if the "Allow phonetic typing" is checked. Then it will give you the English word "Hi". The actual spelling is "babushka" but if you enter "bahbushka" it will ask if you mean бабушка.

I am very thankful for Google translate to help with those Russian words I do not know.

Thanks. Its "Alla" not "Ella" She would bite me until I was dead for that error.

Gerry,

I assumed Ella would change her name to the more americanized Ella at the naturalization stage anyway, so no harm done.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

Aww, that's so sweet of you and Alla. rose.gif. I wish could've a chance to learn any other languages in the past but I might be doing so in the future. It's very interesting to see how people communicate to each other using their own language with an accent. I find it's sexy.

OMG a beautiful woman with a Russian accent is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO hot. (I could be biased)

Thanks NickD Yeah Bahbushka can also be a scarf and it is named for the fact that almost every grandmother in the FSU and probably Poland, wears one nearly all the time!! They referred to the women that swept the sidewalks in the morning as the "bahbushka brigade" and I was not sure if they were referring to their age or their scarves!
