Do permanent residents need a passport to travel to Puerto Rico?

Hello

My husband won a week long trip to Puerto Rico at his work (isn't that awesome!?)

My passport expired in December, and since I'm applying for citizenship soon I'd rather not renew it and save the money.

Do permanent residents need a passport to travel to Puerto Rico? or is a US drivers license enough?

Puerto Rico is a US possession so flights between PR and the mainland are considered "domestic" flights. You only need a current government-issued photo ID to fly there from the mainland. Check DOS USCIS for more information.

Puerto Rico is a US possession, and you will not need any kind of visa to go there, if you are already a US Permanent Resident. Flights to Puerto Rico from the mainland US are domestic flights, and you will not have to pass through Customs or Immigration.

However, because Puerto Rico is relatively accessible from the rest of the Caribbean, flights from Puerto Rico to the mainland US are frequently treated as arriving international flights, and it is quite common to have to go through US Customs and Immigration to return from Puerto Rico. Since you are a permanent resident, your valid Green Card should suffice to get you back into the US, if you end up having to go through Customs.

a US Permanent Resident can reenter the US without their foreign passport. So even if you encounter US Immigration, which is not guaranteed, your GC should be enough. You should be able to authoritatively confirm this by contacting CBP through the getyouhome.gov website.

Second, from own experience, what Heat Death stated. You only need your Green Card, but be prepared to encounter CBP agents the size of Andre the Giant jumping you. They jumped me, and I'm 6'6".
