Look up Western Union and Moneygram. They both have agreements with certain banks in Europe to be correspondents. In both cases, at the other end, don't just go to any location because smaller ones will charge an additional fee and/or will not give money in US$ and/or will get you an unfavorable exchange rate.

Finally, check your local bank, some do have special agreements with some banks in Europe.

Finally, I've also used Xoom (xoom.com). It all (fees) depends how quick you need the money to be there.

Do a wire transfer direct to his account. I did this for my fiance. It works really well. Then you have a receipt for evidence of relationship, the money is available to him, and there are great exchange rates through the bank, better than through western union or paypal.

I use www.XOOM.com for amounts up to 2500 $.

There is just a flat fee of 4.99 $ per transfer (no matter how much you send) from your US bank account to the recipient's German bank account.

Transfer takes only about 3-5 days.

Thanks, Karin!

I have 2 life insurances in Germany and in order to feed hem, I transfer a $1,000 every 3 months to Germany, which costs me $30 in Citibank wire transfer fees here, plus, I believe, another 10 Euros on the other end. I am doing this for 20+ years now, so I'll give XOOM a try.

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.
