This is just a helpful guide for those who would like to share their new family life via the internet with their own custom website without knowing any web development skills and at a reasonable cost.

  1. Purchase and register your domain (ex. smithfamily.com) through a Registry like GoDaddy.com. *May take 24 hours to be active*
  2. Register an account with Tumblr.
  3. At your Registry's website, go to your domain manager and find the domains DNS settings. *This step varies depending on the Registry*
  4. Find the @ symbol under A (Host).
  5. Change the A Record to the right of @ to 72.32.231.8 and save.
  6. Go to your Tumblr Dashboard and click Preferences.
  7. Find URL section and check the "Use a custom domain name" box and type in the domain address that you purchased. Click save at the bottom.
  8. Test to see if your domain is resolving to Tumblr correctly here:
    http://www.tumblr.com/check_domain
  9. That's it! Start blogging away.

Feel free to ask any questions if you need help during this process.

Thanks for this post, I will try to do this at some point, soon. So much on here to learn and absorb, I want to do it right the first time...no stumbling blocks, if possible.

It can seem daunting at first, but it's really not that bad once you do it and I would suggest using GoDaddy if you are starting out fresh. We have an account with them too and can give you detailed screenshots if you need them.

OR you can go to a site like "My Heritage" and get a free family tree website that way.

That service is related to only Family Genealogy, I just meant a traditional website to blog updates about your life with a custom domain. Not your family history.

Okay then you can use www.blogger.com for free. I don't understand spruiking a paid site.

Most blogging websites are very restrictive in how you use them, along with long URLs, but Tumblr provides more flexibility and a custom domain is only ~$11/year. It's not for everybody, but those who like to be creative and make something their own can have fun with it. Just passing on years of web dev experience to anybody who wants it.

Thanks for sharing your expertise, Connor,

I know that GoDaddy and Tumblr are both well respected websites. It's nice to have a heads up on how to use them for personal blogging with a creative flair.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

I'm using GoDaddy. I can arrange all my blog by using WordPress. It's simple and practical.

I loooove Tumblr. It's user friendly and free! But if I get more views I'll probably consider having a personal domain. I'm just not sure about blogging too much about my personal life.
