Main thing to note - the current Alitalia is a new incarnation formed in 2009 when the "old" Alitalia went into bankruptcy. The "new" Alitalia doesn't have the same financial issues that the old one had (even if to the passenger's perspective, it's basically the same company - same planes, same staff, same routes).

Never used them for a Trans-Atlantic flight, but flown with (both New and Old) Alitalia a lot in Europe and never had any issues.

  • My flights have always been on time (except for one flight, when the weather was delaying all flights)
  • Never lost or delayed my bags.
  • Friendly, polite crew.
  • Planes no more comfortable/ uncomfortable than any other airline.

It's a major European airline. I'd have no hesitation flying with them, especially if they are much cheaper than the competition.

You can never guarantee that any airline won't suddenly collapse, so book with a credit card for the added protection (and if you are really concerned, you can buy insurance).

I love Spaghetti and Italian wine, so hell ya' I fly Alitalia if the price is right!

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

I flew with them from Chicago to Greece and had no problems at all. Great service and food was above average.

VolmTe,

I'm Italian and I happened to fly with Alitalia for my entire life basically. I once also attended a maintenance seminar I had to follow for one of my classes in college at their facility in Rome Fiumicino Airport. From a safety point of view they're one of the best ones in the world and pilots and technicians are highly skilled and qualified. I trust them with my life and never had a single problem with them. Alitalia's financial crisis was mainly due to the fact that before 2008 It was basically a state-run company with a big debt due to overemployment and too many benefits for workers paid with the tax-payers money..now they're a private company and definitely back in business and in much better shape compared to 4 years ago. They're renewing their fleet at the moment with a slow phase out of some of their old long range aircrafts to with brand new A330s,so there might be the chance that you won't fly on a new plane but on an aged one inside, but perfect from a structural and mechanical point of view. So if you will fly with them don't worry ;)

Having lived in Italy for 2 years and travelled for work from there, mostly with Alitalia; it is a first class airline. Reliable aircraft and pilots, friendly staff; yet all other airline travel ####### applies.

Alitalia is well-known in Europe and it's a reliable airline, don't worry. I'd say their level of service is below Air France and British Airways, but way above US Airways for example. About the same as KLM.

I used Alatlia and would never fly them again. It was an absolute horrible expereince. Their flights were not on time (delayed for hours), the workers were note very helpful and the atmospjere on the flights was negative. I don't care how cheap they are, I would never recommend them.

It is good to see that so may others have had a positive experience. Wish I could have been one of them.
