Hello All,

This is the first time i'm posting here. I'm a USC from India, ir1/cr1 petition for m y wife was completed on Nov 19th and still waiting for Visa Interview date just like many others here. I thought of something which i thought i will ask for you guys opinion.

I recently enrolled my wife on my employer sponsored Health Insurance benefit for 2012, expecting my wife will be here in the US sometime early 2012. Do you folks think whether showing the health insurance cards also as one of the proof for bonafide relationship during the visa interview will be a good idea.

It would be good supporting evidence. "Proof" is not really applicable.

Dont you need a SSN for enrolling into health insurance? I wasnt able to do that without the SSN.

Depends on the insurance company and sometimes only depends on the HR person you talk to.

Yes, I was able to enroll my wife in health, dental and vision insurance for 2012 as I am hoping for her to join me soon. Needless to say, she has no SSN. Problem is, they only issue medical i.d. cards with the contract holders name on it (that's me), so they are useless for bona fide purposes. Sometimes you just can't win for losing.

Note:  I am the U.S. citizen sponsor.  All info below applies to my immigrant wife.

Yep. From both the bonifide marriage side and the affidavit of support side.

We used the health insurance card in the K3 interview, the AOS interview, and the IR1 interview. From the affidavit of support side it one more tool to assure the officer (they consider medical costs sometimes) that the health costs are covered for your sponsored immigrant and that eliminates at least one possible reason to scrutinize your case

As to the card with no dependents, if you go to the health insurers website you can always get a list of covered dependents that way. So, the card, the plan info, and list of covered dependents together demonstrate coverage. That's just another way to do it.

The SS number issue can usually be taken care of by talking to HR - so far we have been able to do it (in 2007 with my wife and 2009 with our newborn daughter / born overseas / didnt get a SS card for 6 months). Usually they will work with you - AKA Pushbrk is correct - it is up to HR BUT if they offer dependent coverage and you have your marriage document then they can authorize your spouse to be added pending a SS number.

Best of luck!
