CAIRO (AP) — Around 200 Coptic Christians and Muslims clashed in a southern Egyptian province after a drawing depicting the Prophet Muhammad was posted on a local Christian student's Facebook page.

Troops sealed off several flashpoint villages after angry residents in the province of Assiut, 200 miles (320 kilometers) south of Cairo, burnt seven Coptic homes in reaction to the drawing.

Muslims generally oppose any depiction of the prophet, even favorable, for fear it could lead to idolatry. This particular drawing depicted four women asking the prophet's hand in marriage.

The strife began late Thursday when four homes belonging to relatives of the Coptic student were burned.

Villagers burned another three homes belonging to Copts in nearby villages on Friday. Copts comprise around 10 percent of Egypt's population.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Just when the Christian/Muslim stories were starting to get positive for the new year around here....:(

...is when reality set in.

As a Muslim i believe that the reactions that Muslims gave was wrong so wrong....what was done was an insult yes but education and our own actions or reactions is a better way to teach than this.

with that being said.....when this statement came out .. http://news.antiwar.com/2011/12/30/egypts-muslim-brotherhood-vows-to-protect-churches-during-christmas/

why would anyone feed the fire that it "seems" others were trying to put out?

just my opinon

Yes those reactions were wrong. That was very insulting to muslims, and if you already know it will be an insult then why would you choose to inflame members of another religion? We all need to try to live peacefully together and not make insults. But that does not give anyone permission to attack because of an insult. It was not an act of war or something serious, just rude.

And another note, drawings of the Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) are not offensive just because it could lead to idoltary, it is more because no one knows how he (pbuh) really looked and its rude to just make up how someone looks. I wouldn't like if people in the future drew my face and made something look different, too big, too small. The Prophet deserves more respect than someone just messing around with how he looks (pbuh).

Happy New Year to everyone, keep remembering the brighter sides of life too.

IMO any human being that goes nuts over a picture of Muhammad should be put to death, especially if they choose to burn someones house down over it.
