Never updated CRA for SIN because I never use my SIN since I moved to the USA.

Did not do any name changes or anything because I don't live in Canada! If I ever move back I will do name changes then - I have only updated my Canadian Passport.

After 2 years i'm still transitioning and with the Holidays around I miss my timmys hot chocolate! Sure you can buy the tins and make it yourself but some how it just does not taste the same as getting it from tims!

Trying to also decide if I will do the Naturalization process without my hubbster being here. Hes slated to be deployed during the time that I would apply/ take the oath etc. Its a big thing and Id really like him to be there but lately he doesn't seem as enthused about it! Said he already considers me American lol.

Thanks Inky, I think you may need to update your SIN number with you married name (did you change your name?), I believe you may need to in order for you to receive your Canadian Pension once you are of retirement age. I can't seem to find any threads on this topic that are current. I believe with a name change SIN should be updated, and change of address with CRA is questionable, not sure on that one, seeing I was on E.I when I left. But I know on the 2011 income tax return it will need to be indicated that you, me , we left Canada, an official exit notice of sometype will need to be provided. And I didn't even consider changing my Canadian Passport to my new name, so I guess that is inorder.

According to the Service Canada Website, a change in name should be made on:

S.I.N

Passport

Canada Revenue

Health Card

Drivers lic.

but it doens't specify for oversee's marriages, I will contact the Canadian Consulate here in the US for their Advice.

Oh yes...miss Timmies soooo much....my sister sent me a big TIN of the coffee, and your right it just doesn't taste the same out of the TIN, and boy do I miss good bread, nice dark rye bread here is way too expensive, I have to find some European Deli's perhaps to find some Good Bread...

by Naturalization you mean becoming a US citizen? I too am unsure if I want to, we have a choice correct? I understand the only thing we can't do if we are not Amercian citezens is vote...

S.I.N - I don't work in Canada or do anything in Canada, no need to update this.

Passport - update this for easier traveling without using a marriage certificate to show name difference on green card.

Canada Revenue - no need don't file taxes or anything in Canada.

Health Card - you cant use it anymore so don't need to update it.

Drivers lic. - don't use this no need to update the name with them. I have and use a US drivers license

You don't need to update any of this lol. I don't get a Pension or anything like that!!

if you have worked in Canada, later on in your life, one is entitled to a pension. Not exactly sure how much 1 would receive, probably based on how much you earned and how long you worked in Canada

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

probably, lol But I had an American patient, and when he found out I was a canuck he had to tell me how much he loved Canada, as he had worked for a very short while in Canada, yet he was recieving a pension!! It was like $10 a month or something, maybe it was $10 a year! He thought it was very funny.

You have to have worked x number of work periods (or whatever they call them)since the age of 18 I believe in order to be entitled to Canada Pension

I changed my address with the CRA and also called the GST and HST credit lines to tell them not to send me any more cheques. The latter is important if you were receiving them because you're not eligible for them after you leave and if they keep sending them to you they'll want that money back. I believe Inky has mentioned before that this happened to her and it was a big mess involving a lot of phone tag.

I figured I'd change my address with the CRA "just in case," if they want to send me mail, even if that mail is by mistake/unnecessary I definitely want to see it!

Yep had a huge thread on it lol. Their issue was though that all my checks were sitting stacked in their mail room while they claimed i had cashed them all.

I've just been changing my name on an 'as-needed' basis. I waited until my passport expired and then just changed to my new name when I renewed (2 years after I married). I travelled a lot inbetween that period and didn't have any problems at all. Just carried my marriage certificate (and still do to be safe).

When I got a new driver's license in the US, I just got it in my married name. They had no issues.

Didn't switch my health card. I actually still have the red/white card that never expires so I will never let that thing go until they force me!!!

I also never changed my SIN. If and when I move back to Canada, I'll go change my name on the card.

CRA - I did my exit taxes in my maiden name and that was that. If and when I file taxes in Canada again, I'll just send a note with my marriage certificate noting my name change.

I wonder if I'll ever be able to get a Canada pension. I worked part time since I was 15 in Canada, and full time for 2 years before I moved. I'm sure I'll qualify for a very small amount. I bet it won't even be worth claiming!

I'm in Canada now and been here for the past week. I went through the Tim Hortons drive thru today and wow the menu is changing! They have white hot chocolate now, lattes and expresso. The prices are great too. I was never really a coffee drinker when I lived in Canada and now I am so I had a timmy's coffee today and it was actually really good. I would definitely miss it if I'd been accustomed to drinking it everyday! I have to say though, I did really enjoy the Second Cup coffee I had this week as well. I sure don't miss the weather. It's been so cold and snowy/freezing rainy. I forgot how much salt there is everywhere and how frigid it gets! I don't think I'll ever be as familiar and comfortable with NY and I am with Canada... but what's weird is that when I come back to Canada, I feel completely okay with being a visitor.

Oh and I almost forgot... the most annoying but necessary name change I did was with Aeroplan. They require a letter in writing and copy of the marriage certificate. If you collect airline points, the name on those accounts needs to match the name you travel with. So for the two years I travelled on my maiden name, I was fine. But when I updated my passport with my married name, I had to get a new Aeroplan number as well. It was one think I didn't think of until I went to go use my number to travel!

thanks Saffire Dreams..your post was very helpful..I will definetely contact CRA..would hate to have to go through what Inky had to go through..didn't even consider HST/GST rebates cheques, and not looking forward to the last exit tax return..I know this will be the last one..but still have to do a return here too, hopefully it will be easy seeing I am a spouse here with no income, other that foreign investments which I don't believe need to be claimed, still need to find a knowledge CPA or Tax specialist for this reason.

thanks everyone...I think i will take the Pocheros route and contact CRA to update SIN with new married name, as I am definetely due Canadian Pension for all the number of years I worked in Canada..don't want to lose that no-way....
