FLASHBACK TO 11/3/10:

Barack Obama was today facing a harsh new US political reality in the wake of one of the worst Democratic defeats for 70 years.

In midterm election races across America, Republicans pummelled their opponents, capturing the House of Representatives and a fistful of Senate seats.

With some seats still to be counted, the Republicans picked up at least 60 House seats, eclipsing their 54 gains in 1994 and the party's best result since 1938. They also gained at least six Senate seats, falling short of the 10 they needed to gain control of the upper house.

It was a remarkable comeback from two years ago, when many experts expected the party to endure a long time in the political wilderness in the wake of Obama's emphatic 2008 presidential election victory.

Instead, Obama faces a hard political lesson after a hammering that wiped away the last vestiges of the euphoria that swept him to the White House.

Congressional Performance

5% Think Congress Doing a Good Job: New Low

Friday, December 30, 2011

Just when you think the numbers couldn't get any worse for Congress, the end of session debacle over the payroll tax extension comes along and drives perceptions of Congress even lower.

The latest Rasmussen Reports national telephone survey finds that just five percent (5%) of Likely Voters rate the job Congress is doing as good or excellent. Sixty-eight percent (68%) view Congress' job performance as poor.

The survey of 1,000 Likely Voters was conducted on December 27-28, 2011 by Rasmussen Reports. The margin of sampling error is +/- 3 percentage points with a 95% level of confidence. Field work for all Rasmussen Reports surveys is conducted by Pulse Opinion Research, LLC. See methodology.

Of course Congress is feckless. The House passes a bill, it dies in the Senate. The Senate passes a bill, the President goes on TV and the press demagogues the process, the House caves in and passes the bill by unanimous consent.

Actually, the Tea Party backed freshmen in Congress were elected to do exactly what they've been doing - nothing. The teabaggers don't like gubmint and they want it to fail and die like an old dinosaur. They want us to be free from the chains of a representational democracy and they are inching us closer to their goal. If only they could have privatized Medicare and Social Security.

Since when have you ever respected the "representational" aspect of government? To you, a 70% backing from the electorate is nothing more than mob rule.

None of the elected "representatives" are doing much representing except those elected under the Tea Party banner. Trouble is, the idiots grouped under the Tea Party banner may be representing their constituencies, but they don't represent anything like the majority of the overall electorate. Mixed in with the Democrats and Republicans desperate to cling onto their seats in 2012 and you have a recipe for political points scoring in place of policy making for the next ****ing year.

It'll make for good pantomime, but this country's condition is likely to suck big time come November 2012 and whoever wins the White House (and I expect it to be a second term Obama presidency) will do so because the country despises them less than the "other guy."

Please stop bickering. You can disagree with the commentary but it is unnecessary to direct personal comments at each other. It accomplishes nothing and leads to TOS violations.

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Your lack of comprehension is not my problem.

Your insults are moderation's problem now.

Misrepresenting someone's views by somehow keeping a mental filing cabinet of what you think they have said is amusing. Of course, based on the kind assumptions you make, like assigning the "fast and furious" on the current Administration with the presumption that everyone agrees it is some kind of scandal shows just how you digest information. Sad for you.
