Wow that's hard core cabin living. We live in an old cabin (from the 1800s) on the edge of wooded farmland. I moved here from an apartment in central London so it was a little bit of culture shock. I always complain to my husband about the 'outside' coming inside too much. It's a tough place to live and clean in winter. A friend from the UK was horrified to see me heavily pregnant and hauling logs in for the wood stove but that's the way to stay warm!

Oh, good on you!

but it's tough to enforce with country living. Sometimes it feels like my city life with all the comforts of 'civilisation' was a dream! And we live an hour from D.C. so not an Alaskan.wilderness. Sounds fabulous though - your wife must me a tough cookie.

An hour from D.C.? Holy mackerel. Well, we're an hour from the Yukon River. By supercub anyway. You can drive it in five or boat to it in a day.

We got 12 cords of wood put up. Lol. She's the stacker. Bring on the fifty below zero.

I wanted to share some of the odd things my wife does. Share some of your stories.

1. Sweeps the carpet with her small straw broom.

2. Caught her cleaning the bath tub with a toilet brush.

3. When taking pictures never a pic taken with 3 people.

4. Refuses to use our brand new dishwasher. Most of our dishes are cleaned in cold water with extreme amounts of dish soap.

5. Our son uses a bucket in the shower and doesn't turn on the shower head.

6. Cleans her teeth before she eats, not after.

7. When buying pants she measures the waist with her neck. Never seen this done before.

8. Rarely likes to put food in the icebox after she cooks.

9. Uses msg and sugar like it's going out of style."Guess she doesn't want me around for too long...lol"

10.Likes to squat on a chair instead of sitting while we eat dinner.

Despite all what I describe, I wouldn't change a thing and love her so much!!!!

No offence, but I guess your wife is from the countryside, back in Vietnam, and in her middle age.

1. Country people in VN, many of them, use straw brooms to sweep their floor, which is traditionally dirt or brick, or sometimes cement. Very few houses in VN have carpet flooring installed. Nowadays, the most popular type of flooring is ceramic tiles. (By the way, where did your wife get her straw broom? She didn't bring it with her from VN, did she? I've never seen such a thing around here since I came.)

2.

Maybe that's because the bathroom and the toilet bowl looks the same to her, in color. And I guess she doesn't have a bath much, mostly take a shower, so it doesn't matter to her much.

3. It's the old belief that quite a few VN folks hold: if three people pose for a picture, the one in the middle will die (I don't know when, and how sooner than the other two, but eventually we will all die, won't we?)

4. I guess she uses cold water just to save electricity.

5. My explanation would be he didn't have a shower head or a bath tub back in VN. They took the water from the well, or water tank. In that situation, a bucket and a cup work. Probably the bathroom vanities are still too complicated to him.

6. Does she do that in the morning, after she gets out of the bed? And I guess it's the only time in the day she cleans her teeth.

7.It might sound funny but many people there believe that you can tell the size of one's waist by measuring their neck, and the size of a man's p*** by looking at his big toes. (I'm not sure about that.)

8. I guess she didn't have a fridge in her home country. She cooked twice or three times a day and they ate everything she cooked, or the leftovers, if any, were fed to the animals.

9. ..............

10. She is not used to dining table and chairs. She had spent all her life having meals sitting flat or squatting right on the floor.

My fiancé is British and during our visits I noticed some things...

1. Never uses the dryer! All the clothes are put on the line or laid over the radiators/banisters/tables/etc. His whole family does this.... They never use the dryer but they all own one.

2. Obviously, the his silverware never changes hands when he eats.

3. He doesn't answer the phone with "hello" but instead "you alright?" and thinks I'm strange for doing so...

4. Aresole deodorant! It's like all anyone uses over there it seems.

5. He eats weird stuff.... Like marmite, mooshy peas, everything in pie form, and god forbid the black pudding.

6. Of course, the odd little pronunciations which I adore. The first time I heard him say 'urinal' I giggled madly. Also, tortoise is my favorite, pronounced like 'toy-tuss'.

7. Every dinner has a starter, main course, and dessert. Also, he calls dinner 'tea' and lunch 'dinner'.

Mayo on everything, almost, but it's different than what we have here in the US, it's mildly spicy. I thought he was nuts when he told me he puts it on spaghetti, but I tried it and it's good. And of course we put it on suxhuk (sausage) and eggs, which is eaten on pieces of bread. And the bread is never sliced, always torn. Albanians eat a LOT of bread!

Shoes off at the door...always. This was new to me, but I liked it. I'm practicing it at home now, but it's not working so well at my neighbor's. I took to bringing my own slippers, but people wonder why I should bother, especially since they have pets walking in and out.

Pets....he loves them, but not in the house.

Open windows. He had his windows open 90% of the time I was there (6 weeks), but if he got a headache it was from walking by an open window on a windy day. But driving with the car windows down was fine. It's just something that is taught in that region.

Toothpaste. Apparently after bushing one's teeth you should eat an apple. They even show it on TV commercials. The purpose is to remove the toothpaste taste from your mouth.

I've been told by dentists here in Sweden that toothpaste is good for your teeth and you needn't (shouldn't?) wash it out so thoroughly after you're done brushing (before you go to bed at least).

Here, too, in America. Here our commercials show people brushing or using mouthwash for fresh breath and then kissing, no apple. That might be a jaw dropper for him.

Ive noticed everybody in the UK hardly uses their dryers too (Im the UKC too!). I use mine all the time now and ive got the bills to show for it :bonk: So i think that might be why. The rest seems pretty quirky to me. Perhaps theyre regional things  I say tortoise like torr-toy-se and my husband always correct me with the US way
