Fair enough. But is this cabin your house? Where you live, eat and sleep?

Yes. On the edge of the wilderness, literally, of interior Alaska. Our property borders about a hundred million acres or so. To step into the forest, we open the front door. A typical day right now has me running out cutting down some trees, dragging them home one way or another, and cutting them up for firewood. This is our firewood collection season. It would be at least $5,000 to heat our place in the winter using oil and I would have to earn $7500 pre-tax to have that much money after-tax. It's less than a hundred bucks to use wood. We pay the state $10 a cord for a permit to cut trees. Sure, we have to do the work but we just love doing it.

I've shot a bear trying to push his way through my front door. We have moose in the yard regularly. A wolf pack ran off with one of the dogs. It was one of those stupid yap-yap chipmunk dogs an ex-wife brought here and I was glad they ate him. Heh. He was out there "yap yap yap..." then silence. I knew exactly what happened.

Before I got married to Lira I drove my snowmachines in the front door so I could keep them warm next to the wood stove. Start them up easy and drive 'em right out the door. I was running a trapline so it was not a matter of being a pig so much as the practicality of it. Being a pig is just a side benefit. :)

Wow that's hard core cabin living. We live in an old cabin (from the 1800s) on the edge of wooded farmland. I moved here from an apartment in central London so it was a little bit of culture shock. I always complain to my husband about the 'outside' coming inside too much. It's a tough place to live and clean in winter. A friend from the UK was horrified to see me heavily pregnant and hauling logs in for the wood stove but that's the way to stay warm!

But we have not had to fight off any large wild animals yet. Thank goodness. I keep trying to lobby for a no shoes in the house policy as the floors do get very dirty but it's tough to enforce with country living. Sometimes it feels like my city life with all the comforts of 'civilisation' was a dream! And we live an hour from D.C. so not an Alaskan.wilderness. Sounds fabulous though - your wife must me a tough cookie.

My wedding day - the best day of my life

My husband likes his salads hot, so he microwaves them. It freaks me out a bit but he is careful not to hand me the one with the cooked lettuce.

I work in an ER and can understand the no shoes thing, but with all the foot funk that is out there just waiting to infect everyone in the house, you just need one really nasty foot fungus or warts to make you less inclined to be without shoes around people who are not so considerate about sharing their diseases. (This IS the voice of experience.)

My husband's family in Lima always wear shoes for EVERYthing in the house--either shoes or sandals. When I had some shoes that were pretty but not so practical, I kicked them off during a party at the house and realized about 10 minutes later why that was a bad idea. My dancing feet were blackened in no time. That is a city of pollution and dust and even though the entire house had been cleaned completely that afternoon, by 9pm, the floors were covered in grime again. It is just part of life there.

OMG, when we lived in France, I thought it was just my husband being weird for cutting his food with the side of his fork, but I've realized most people here do it too! I still have to understand why people prefer to struggle, rubbing their fork frantically on their meat for 5 min, instead of nicely, easily and quickly cutting it with a knife...

Knife always on the table for me too, even if I'm just eating salad.

And fork and knife on the plate when I'm finished if eating out to signal to the waiter that I'm done. Again, I understand better why my husband had problems with it in France and sometimes waited for ages to have his table cleaned, lol!

I know! I dont get it! :bonk:

Though saying that, my husband ate dinner with a sharp knife and his fingers earlier. Each to their own and all that

Strange things my husband does:

Eats Vegemite...and likes it. (No offense meant to the Aussies out there, and anyway, Tim Tams make up for Vegemite in the grand scheme of things.)

I tend to relate to eating vegemite, with the habit of drinking root beer. :P

I introduced my fiance to TimTam's, he loves them! I send him a box every now and then, he prefers the honeycomb ones.

My husband thinks I'm a special weirdo from the Philippines. :bonk:

He laughs at me because ( I used to get mad. He said that I'm so cute and funny, which he doesn't want to change )

1. I wash dishes with some bleach and hot water before I put them in a dishwasher then let the machine runs in a high settings/temp.

2. I make up our bed every mornings before I brush my teeth.

3. I change clothes 3x a day.

4. I don't like ketchup or tomato sauce, but I love salsa or tomato salads.

5. I don't eat mashed potatoes, but eat a baked potato.

6. I always take off my shoes, flip flops, or sandals before I get in a house.

7. I check his face (eyes, mouth, nose, and lips) to check if there's any food.

8. I make a lame request. (I would like my steak to be cooked between medium rare and medium). My husband was .

9. I don't want to spend any new dollar bills, so I keep them away. :help:

10. I don't answer phone calls after 8PM except emergency phone calls.

11. I don't want him to talk back to his mother whether he is right or wrong.

Life is not a granting factory, according to my colleague.

This thread has been hilarious to read. When my fiance first came to visit I caught him not always flushing toilet paper. That's so nasty. He's from the Toronto area of Canada so it's not like plumbing issues can explain it. We both say "eh" but I'm from Wisconsin so I probably talk like a Canadian half the time myself (or like a Yooper, someone from the upper peninsula of Michigan... they sound pretty similar).

9. I don't want to spend any new dollar bills, so I keep them away. :help:

I do that too, to some extent. If I have crisp bills, I will hang on to them as long as possible and use worn bills first. I also save crisp bills for stores/places I like. If I have two $10 bills and I'm going to two stores, I'll use the bill that's more crisp and new at the store out of the two I like better.

My wedding day - the best day of my life

Mr. Borkström @ Wordpress.com

My husband never removed his shoes if he wasn't going to bed or taking a shower, I thought that was weird until I started visiting people who would look at me funny if I took my shoes off at their door. I'd prefer to not have outside dirt tracked around in the house and intend to break him of that habit!

I also do not brush my teeth after eating, you really should wait a while, cause the food you ate weakens the enamel of the teeth and you can actually brush it off. Brush before!

My husband says "bread and butter" if we have something like a pole or column come between us when walking, I have yet to understand that one, he's just always done it... but I try not to step on cracks, so same kind of thing I bet!

He also uses a fork to cut everything, and he never puts salt or pepper on anything! That's just weird! (he's accused me of salting everything though so finds me weird)

He never has a drink with a meal, that's odd, right?

He puts new toilet paper on the roll!!! that's unusual behaviour for a man!

He will speak to me in character voices, I regularly hear Forrest Gump, Sean Connery, Redneck Man, and I'm Trying to be British Man. It can be quite hilarious. I'm working on my hillbilly accent to pay him back, thank goodness he can't do Canadian! (he's from Arkansas, so does have a soft southern drawl)

He spends his coins instead of putting them in the piggy bank.

He chews one piece of gum all day long! I can't stand them after about 20 minutes.

He sticks pens in the neck of his shirt, he'll often have 3 or 4 hanging down the inside of his collar, with only the lid flap hanging out, and he's a huge pen #######, steals them from everywhere! It's weird!

He digs his fingers into my side when he's trying to hug me, like I have a handle he's trying to get a better grip on, but those are RIBS, and that HURTS! I mean, here he is getting snuggly, and OUCH!

He crosses himself when we pass roadkill.

He walks over to me or my son when he has gas to crop dust us. My son thinks it's hilarious... me? Not so much, but I will admit I giggle more when I'm not the victim.

Ahhh, I could go on...

okay, I do some weird stuff too: Gravy on fries, mayo on fries, I leave a little food on my plate too (heard the fairy story, but it's really so you'll never go hungry, I think the fairies will steal all your food and money if you don't save them or something, but anyway, I don't ever want to tempt fate!) I hide a penny in every corner of every room to make sure I'll never go without money too, and leave pennies in every purse. (a purse with no money is bad luck!) I never put shoes on the table. I make sure to close cupboards religiously. (there are reasons for those too) And if a knife and fork cross on my plate, I have trouble bringing myself to uncross them, I'll shake my plate rather than touch them crossed. Not even sure why, just my grandmother freaked out on my when I was a kid and I've learned never to do it!
