He eats the cartilage from between the chicken bones. He said it's good for your health. I don't care how healthy it is, I would gag trying to eat it.

I eat it too, and everyone I know back home. Actually, as kids we fought with each other over who gets to eat it. Fortunately, American spouse is picky, so I dont have to share it with him.

He cuts bread weird. If I want "American style slices" I need to cut them before he does! His way.....cut in quarters, eat a chunk. He eats chunks of bread, uses it to sop up soup, push food onto his fork, etc. He can eat half a loaf in one meal!

I wanted to make myself a sandwich.....found the bread like this ohmy.png

And....the concept of meat, vegetables and a starch in three separate piles on a plate is lost to him. If I say, "I want green beans", he says, "That sounds good, we can add chicken." Same with any other vegetable, it's just part of a big bowl of veggies with chicken or beef. I think Albanians have 50 different ways to combine meat and veggies all in one pot. I'm sure that's an exaggeration.

I only did the " taking shoes off at the door thing" when I moved here to the US because of the carpeted floors. When I lived at a place with hardwood I didn't take them off. In India I always changed to house slippers because the floors were made of marble or mosaic and they aren't comfortable barefoot. Most people were welcome to wear their shoes at our place and we didn't generally take our shoes off there and actually wore rubber slippers to the bathroom. The reason why I take off my shoes here is because the carpet is easier to clean when you don't have all sorts of ####### from outside caking it. It means the carpet lasts longer and I generally leave an apartment with VERY clean carpets when my lease ends and I get my refund back in full.

Strange things my husband does:

Eats Vegemite...and likes it. (No offense meant to the Aussies out there, and anyway, Tim Tams make up for Vegemite in the grand scheme of things.)

Irons his clothes. I told him quite early on that, while I love him madly, I do not iron. He's cool with doing it himself. I know ironing is not strange in itself, but I don't think any of the men I know here in the US would iron clothes unless they were under duress.

On the phone, says 'See ya!' instead of 'goodbye' or 'bye.' So I say it now, too.

My sister refuses to say goodbye, she said you only say goodbye at death, it was always see ya, or some variation.

That's interesting. In my culture we have the same thing. We never say "bye" but "I'm coming back soon" and the other person will say " Sure, come back soon".

Only just noticed my husband doing this yesterday lol. Could not fathom why on earth he needs to take such a big chunk of bread? In the U.K I would cut it at a reasonable width to make a nice sarnie or to dip in soup, but not a doorstep size piece like the picture you attached.....lol

I'm the foreign fiancee, and I would never dream of wearing shoes inside my own home. I can do it at other people's houses in America, since everyone else is wearing shoes and my socks/feet would get really dirty, but I just get really uncomfortable with shoes on indoors. They're so constricting and then my feet get really gross and yuck. Definitely shoes off in my house! Keep that street stuff of my floors and all.

Another thing that makes me strange in the US is that my concept of a "meal" is very different. I don't think a sandwich counts as a meal, really - it works as a lunch in a pinch, or if it's REALLY HUGE (think footlong subs), but otherwise it's a snack at best. For me, a meal is something warm and substantial that you sit down to eat, most commonly from a plate of some kind, though I've noticed that many meals in America are made to be eaten by hand, like tacos or burgers or things like that. I also find it exceedingly strange that Americans put two different kinds of meat on a single sandwich, like ham and turkey or chicken and bacon. It's just too weird for me. And no, it still doesn't make the sandwich a meal in my book!

Likewise, when we have steak with just salt and pepper on it, or with fries or grilled corn in the best case, that's not a full meal to me. It needs to have a side dish and it needs to have a sauce. It's a horrible waste to eat something so tasty without a sauce to go with it! It's just so dry and not as tasty as it could have been. I was actually quite disappointed at Outback Steakhouse when they didn't include any kind of sauce with my steak, nor did they give me herb/garlic butter. There was just nothing with the meat at all, in a restaurant! That's crazy! My USC fiance thinks I'm totally bonkers for thinking that, because there's no better flavor to him than that of unadorned meat... But I disagree. I was raised to have a sauce with a good meal, and I will forever demand a sauce with a good meal. Thankfully sauces are sort of my forte with cooking, so that should work out fine.

I also get really uncomfortable talking to sales people in stores, because if you need any kind of more personalized help, the sales people are going to start asking all kinds of personal questions I'm not comfortable answering. Being a foreign person getting married to an American, I'm an automatic curiosity, and then everyone needs to know how we met and how we handle the relationship right now and aaaaargh all I wanted was to ask about some wedding rings! I don't know if I should tell them it makes me uncomfortable and settle with being rude or what, but I can't quite handle the American way of talking about yourself so much to people you barely know. I guess I'll get there, but... We Finnish folks, much like a Swedish person who posted earlier, are just a bit rude by American standards. So I guess that's one "oddity" I have that I share with my Scandinavian brethren, haha!

I agree...some people here have pets walking in and out and pet hair on their floors. Your socks will be too dirty for your shoes!

I've noticed that many meals in America are made to be eaten by hand, like tacos or burgers or things like that. I also find it exceedingly strange that Americans put two different kinds of meat on a single sandwich, like ham and turkey or chicken and bacon. It's just too weird for me. And no, it still doesn't make the sandwich a meal in my book!

That's just fast food and junk food in my book. And ew, I agree about the 2 meats. I don't like to eat out. And since hubby is here now I mostly cook Albanian food for him.

Again..I agree, not a good option. I need my meat smothered.

I also get really uncomfortable talking to sales people in stores,

I rarely ask for help. I thought it was strange that in Kosovo my hubby always asks for help. In fact, he expects the sales person to do all the looking for him. I refused to ask. I prefer to look on my own, even in Kosovo. I think he has resigned to doing the looking himself here, especially since it's hard to find a sales person anyway.
