For about a year, we lived in an old hunters cabin on my husband's dad's property.

It had no heat and no bathroom. I used to clean my husbands toe nails out all of the time (I know gross, whatever) because they were verging on BLACK! I didn't realize that was because it was so dirty out there until now when I see they never get that dirty anymore lmao.

We used to have to go out to his dad's garage to use the bathroom in the middle of the night with a little flashlight and during the winter, we used a space heater that kept the cabin a toasty 48 degrees Fahrenheit for most of the winter :P

Oh the things I sacrificed for him...

Mine has given up cooking in the kitchen for the most part and cooks on the wood stove now because it is way warmer next to the stove and what is the point of buying propane for the kitchen stove when you have a perfectly good wood stove to cook on top of. Heats the water for dishes on the stove too. The only time we turn the propane water heater on is when we want to take showers.

She's been the perfect wife for living in the woods. But she's a little miffed at me and wouldn't drive the snow machine today because I criticized her execution of an angled incline approach with a full sled yesterday. :)

I thought this thread was hugely entertaining.

I asked my fiance if he's noticed me doing any weird (to him) stuff and if so, what exactly it was? He told me he couldn't really think of any... but maybe that was just self-preservation :-p He did tell me he thought it was really weird how Europeans eat their French fries with Mayonaise... but then again I saw him dip a French fry in a vanilla milkshake once so I'm sure that's not saying much :-D He also thought eating ground raw meat (we call it americain prepare) was disgusting. I have to admit I'm not a huge fan of it either.

Aside from that he named all the typîcal man-female things:

- I take too long to get ready

- I fold his clothes and socks and put them away but he prefers his organized chaotic closet thank you very much

- I change my mind every five seconds

- I have to pee all the time

- I get too mushy after a glass of wine

- etc etc etc

I wonder what other things will pop up once I move to the states :-)

One thing I've noticed, which my USC husband finds weird is that I wash my underwear BEFORE I take a bath. Always. Then I hang them in the bathroom to dry. It's something we're brought up doing here; it's part of our hygiene routine. I wouldn't keep my panties dirty for a whole week then wash them when doing the laundry, eww!!!

He did tell me he thought it was really weird how Europeans eat their French fries with Mayonaise

But it's not plain Mayonnaise like we have here in the USA. It has FLAVOR and I love it! And I can't find it here. I thought my hubby was weird when he told me he puts in on spaghetti. But I tried it and it was good. (yes, the sauce was on there too). I did mix some onion powder and mustard in with some plain Mayo and got about the same flavor.

just discussing it don't forget that for us who came from other countries - Americans also do odd things :yes::yes:, and we still love you :D. Though I changed a lot of my habits for my beloved husband, especially remembering that after being in the NAVY all his clothes should be folded in a special way :D:D:D, but it was so small things for me, I will do this small things for my husband so he will be happy. of course I should say they my husband don't pay attention to other stuff which I'm doing incorrectly :D:D:D

My fiance always sweeps his carpet in the living room, and he's the USC. First time I saw him do that I told him (quite logically I thought): "you're just moving the dust around, you need to vacuum a carpet". He just frowned at me, went: "silence woman! that made too much sense" and went right back to sweeping the carpet :-p I'm sure it's just a man thing though, not cultural. He's military, so he's even more neurotic than I am. Boy, is he in for a shock when we live together full-time, with a one year old baby :-D

I just thought of two things that I find "weird" about the states. One: the public restrooms. I'm not sure whether it's like this in each state but I absolutely loathe using a public restoom in America so far. Not that they're not clean, they usually are, but there's like an inch missing between the door and the wall or next stall on each side! You can actually see the people standing beyond the toilet in the hall. I mean, I might be paranoid, but if I can see them they can see me right? I always drape my jacket and scarf over the slits on each sides :-p I was on a college trip in Manhattan once, and we were having dinner in a restaurant in China Town. I went to the restroom downstairs, and there was a little lady there to keep it clean and help the guests I guess if they needed something. So there I was, in the toilet stall, totally just going about my business when, for no particular reason I looked up... through the slit and straight into the eyes of the little lady who then proceeded to cheerfully smile and wave at me. I nearly fell in the darned toilet :-p

Another thing that we're not used to in Belgium is the way soda is watered down in the states. When we request a coke somewhere we just receive it in a glass, more often than not no ice, and with a tiny slice of lemon. In the states you receive goblets of coke, which is nice, but there's so much water in it from the ice that it just detracts taste. It's not a bad thing... just very different.

Blech! I can't drink soda with ice in it.

I ALWAYS request no ice and I will get so perturbed if they bring it to me with ice because after 5 minutes it's just disGUSTING

I never had anyone smile at me but yes, they pretty much all have a space around the doors, in every state. I guess that defines "public" bathroom LOL

I put ketchup on my pasta (spaghetti, mostly) instead of pasta sauce. My husband finds it absolutely revolting. I'll eat pasta with pasta sauce too, though - to me it's just another common way of eating pasta. Pasta with Alfredo sauce, pasta with pesto, pasta with red sauce, pasta with ketchup... ;)

Married since 03/02/2011, AOS from F-1 visa, green card granted 05/24/2011.
Blessed with a healthy baby boy, 08/19/2011! We get to keep our family together! Thank you! smile.png
