ok quick question, what is the purpose to file for a ss card in maiden name only to go back and do a name change after marriage? I assume its fine just to get married and then go to SS office and get a card in her married name. Am i missing something? Reason for asking, getting married tomorrow, and then going to apply for card in married name. Any thoughts?

Thanks

Sometimes the SSA won't give you the card in your married name because the immigration system is in her maiden name. Sometimes they'll tell you she's not eligible because once she married she changed to a K3 which isn't eligible for a SSN.

I would go tomorrow and get it in maiden name (or the day after). Then once you get the marriage cert try and change it to maiden. Most likely they won't let you change it till she gets an EAD or GC but at least you'll have the number to file taxes (and you'll have to file in her maiden name if the card is still in maiden name).

If they tell you that you can't get it in your maiden name then you can email the social security office about it and they'll email back telling you to try again and that if they still won't give you one to talk to the manager of the branch because you ARE allowed to have one, people just don't get trained right, lol. I know a bunch of people lately who have done this.

It seems it depends on where you live, which I do not understand at all because you would think the process is the same across the nation.whistling.gif

I've read some people do not have any issues getting it with married name. I've also read where the applicant was told to go back when they

have their green card.

We did not want to take a chance here in CA, so, Patty applied for SSN one week after arriving and received her SS card one week later. The SSA

technician reminded us to get married within 90 days and come back after we got married to get a name change on Patty's SS card.
