I called the embassy yesterday to get some information on my husband's case. The woman who answered the phone told me that my husband's namecheck was complete and that next week, the staff should be there to complete cases since it's a holiday. So, I called the DOS just to get some closure. She said that it was under administrative processing and I asked if it was still in Washington D.C. under namechecks and she said, it doesn't show that on her computer. So, as anxious as I am, I called again today at the consulate, and the woman said that it was under administrative processing and I asked if namechecks were complete and she was unsure about that. Anyways, so, again I called DOS and they said the same thing about administrative processing. Previous times of calling, I've gotten that it's under mandatory administrative processing. So, recently, I'm getting the information for just administrative processing. I was wondering, what is the difference between Mandatory Administrative Processing and just Administrative Processing? My understanding was that Mandatory Administrative Processing happens at Washington D.C. for namechecks and background checks. I will not be calling them until next Monday as this was the only time I've ever called them this much.

AP is AP whether mandatory or not. It is the same process: background, namechecks and verification of the entire file. This process can be exhausting and the vocabulary can easily throw us off. I'd say, wait until next week and call again.

Don't ever do anything you're not willing to explain the paramedics.

According to the lady at DOS, administrative processing is a blanket statement. It means that they are still working on the case. I was asking her the difference betweeen AP and AR. She said that when a case is in AR it is in AP.

AR is when they are checking on your case. It could be they are checking on your relationship (plenty of past people in MENA can tell you about this), they could be confirming documents, or reviewing your paperwork. With this said, AP can also be security checks.

Usually when they tell you it is mandatory administrative processing, this is when it is security checks and it is being done in DC.

When it is at the embassy level....then they are most probably verifying the authenticity of documents, reviewing paperwork, or checking on the relationship.

I am very relieved now since I've gotten a clear response from the embassy:

The administrative processing has been completed, the case is currently being reviewed. Upon completion of this process, we will process the case to conclusion.

Regards,

Consular Section

U.S. Embassy, Cairo

NI

Thank you everyone for your replies. I will be very happy when my husband receives his visa in perhaps lessening the stress endured during this process. I hope everyone has a great New Year and successful journeys! I'll keep you updated on when he receives his visa.
