Anybody here can provide me with step by step info and the requirements on how to report my marriage to the PI consulate? I live in Chicago. Also, what else should I do aside from reporting the marriage? Passport amendment? I just want to do all of these before I start working. I checked different websites but they are confusing. Thanks everyone :)

We just went through it in Washington DC. The documents(THREE COPIES OF EACH), you will need are listed on the Consulate of the Philippines Chicago website. Obviously you only need the documents that apply to you. The form you fill out is on the website. The documents are:

Marriage License.

( ) Marriage Cert./Contract; Cert. of Registration of Marriage

( ) Death Certificate of Previous Spouse.

( ) Photocopy of Passport or I.D. of both parties to prove citizenship

( ) Passport-size photos of both parties

( ) Divorce Decree if Divorced

( ) $25.00 FEE (NO PERSONAL CHECKS)

After they record the marriage, (they will give you a copy), you can apply for your passport in your married name at the same time.

Chinook and I have been looking into reporting our marriage. I would like to add a couple of things:

> It's my understanding that you should report your marriage to the Philippines Consulate which has jurisdiction over the city where you got married. For example, if you got married in Las Vegas and are now living in New York, you would report your marriage to the Consulate which has jurisdiction over Las Vegas.

> You can report your marriage by mail, but you must make a personal appearance at the Consulate if you want to amend or renew your passport. Somebody correct me if I'm wrong about this.

> In addition to other business, you can report your marriage, amend your passport, renew your passport, and apply for dual citizenship at a Consulate outreach program. Check the Consulate's website for the outreach schedule.

What does it mean? That we are married here in the US and not in the PI so we had to report our marriage?

If you were married in the USA, the NSO in the Philippines has no way to record your marriage unless you report it. The Philippine government expects you to report it, but other than denying any benefits your husband may have in the Philippines as your spouse, I don't think there is any detriment to not doing it.

What does it mean? That we are married here in the US and not in the PI so we had to report our marriage?

Actually we did it so that my wife's Philippine Passport would have the same name as her green card. Unless we registered the marriage, the Consulate in Washington DC would not let her change the name on the passport.

Can I go to the PI embassy and do the Report and Passport Amendment at the same time? I wonder how long it will take since I'll be dealing with PI office again.

Yes, you can do both at the same time. I'm not sure how long it would take. I imagine it would take all day at the Embassy/Consulate. It would probably take two days at an outreach, if the outreach is as busy as the one in Seattle.

I don't know how long it takes the Embassy/Consulate to return your passport.

@Steph...Thanks...that's good to know. :star:

My wife and I arrived at the Consulate at 9:30AM and finished at 4PM. I had to make two taxi rides to get additional copies of documents (above what was listed on the web site). Another taxi ride to get a self addressed paid mailer from the post office, (priority or express). That said, the report of marriage is done on the spot and you are given a copy. The E-passport application was completed at the same time and they said it would take about eight weeks to arrive in the mail. Actually it arrived in about three weeks. My wife took care of her voter stuff also while we were there.

So do I have to leave my passport with them for a couple of weeks? I feel uncomfortable doing it! lol Can't I just wait for it while they do that? My passport is valid for 4 more years anyway.

My wife's passport was only 2 years old. However, she wanted a new one in her married name so that it matched her green card.

Yes they keep the old passport, and it comes back to you in the same envelope as the new one. They just punched holes in the old one to show it is no longer valid. As a note, that is the same system we use in the states. When I renew my US passport they keep the old one while they process the new one, and then send it back with the new one.

Darn it I really don't want to leave my passport with them, I still have 4 years in it. I hope they do some stamping instead of giving me a new one.
