The minimum wage caused the federal debt? Interesting theory. Any evidence? And if so, then it would appear that the debt rises as the real minimum wages declines. Another good argument in favor of raising the minimum wage. Never thought of it but it makes sense. Higher wages, more taxes for Uncle Sam. Lower wages, less taxes for Uncle Sam and thus higher deficits.

No, but the graph does do some interesting things over the period you indicated.

What's your point? Minimum wages declines starting in 1968. Debts rose significantly starting around that time. I am not sure that there's a correlation but if there is, then the lesson is that we ought to up them minimum wages and quick.

Its OK KIp, people tend to respond within their abilities. The topic IS minimum wage after all.

His usual response to illegals is...; "I know some illegals working in resteraunts and they don't hurt anyone so it's ok for them to break the laws of this country and it's ok for the employers to break the laws of this country because business owners need bigger profits to fatten their bank accounts."

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

IMHO, the minimum wage increase isn't going to cause a wave of businesses to hire more illegal immigrants. The ones who choose to do that were doing it already. I don't think they're worried over a couple cents per hour. They've been saving quite a bit more than that already. They're also looking to avoid paying employment-related taxes and health insurance, which is a significant expense.

True. Retailers are hiring more people, to get credit for full time equivalent employee positions, however, almost all those jobs are temporary and part time, so that they don't have to pay for the benefits. That seems to be the direction employers are going.

What credit do retailers get for FTEs?

Nothing about FTE's here either. The tax credits are based on eligible groups, hours worked and the applicable wage caps. Now, this scheme does provide an incentive for employers to hire more individuals for shorter hours - somewhere between 400 and whatever makes the employee reach the cap.

For most target groups, the WOTC is based on qualified wages paid to the employee for the first year of employment. Generally, qualified wages are capped at $6,000. The credit is 25% of qualified first-year wages for those employed at least 120 hours but fewer than 400 hours and 40% for those employed 400 hours or more.

  • Summer youth employees. Wages are capped at $3,000 for 16- and 17-year-olds working for a 90-day period between May 1 and September 15.
  • Disabled veterans. Wages are capped at $12,000.
  • Long-term TANF recipients. Wages are capped at $10,000. The WOTC is also available for the employee’s qualified second-year wages, also capped at $10,000. For this group, the credit is 40% of qualified first-year wages and 50% of qualified wages for the second year of employment.

Better yet, post why and in detail please. I'm bored atm, and it would give me lots of fun on here to read your explanation of that answer to Gary's post. Of course after I read it, I'm sure either Gary or myself will tear it apart on here like usual. :)

You and Gary are gonna find a source that links increased minimum wage with increased hiring of illegals. Good luck with that.

And here I was a few days ago reading the both of you cry about how we need to increase the minimum wages of berry pickers in order to decrease the hiring of illegal berry pickers.
