I would be embarrassed to pay someone less than $8 an hour for any kind of work. Again it's 2011 and inflation has went through the roof. The dollar doesn't get you jack ####### compared to what it got you a decade or two ago. Prices go up, but not wages. That's a sign of third world country.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Not only that, stagnating and - in real terms - declining wages also put a wet blanket over a consumer-driven economy.

Yeah, what a fcuked up idea to have people make a living wage. What a horror to think that one should earn enough to pay one's bills in return for an honest day's work. That's so last century. In order for this country to be great again, we need to bring back slave labor.

So how do you feel about the fact this will increase the number of illegals hired by business to avoid paying the new minimum wage? What should we do to employers that avoid the laws we pass so they do NOT have to pay decent wages and benefits, worker protections?

They are in fact, modern day slaves...just rented, not owned.

How so?

Increasing the legal minimum wage will increase the number of illegals hired to avoid the legal minimum wage which will be just fine and dandy with the same people that want the minimum wage raised. Because illegals are brown and do not deserve the same benefits as white people.

Every time the cost of employing workers LEGALLY is increased, either by wages, worker protections, required benefits, etc., the exploitation of illegals becomes that much more profitable for business. each step in economic incentive results in proportionately more economic impact.

This is nothing more than a conscription of more illegals.

See?

You know how I feel about that. The answer surely isn't to drop the hour and wage requirements for lawfully employed persons. That would just mean that you'd make it legal to enslave Americans and lawful residents. That can't be the goal. The answer is to put away with the profiteering on the modern day slave labor. Tax them b!tches to death and make room for legitimate businesses employing people lawfully. I'm on board on that one and you know it.

Not really. The time where the minimum wage actually rose was the period from 1938 to 1968. How much of an illegal alien problem did this country have during those three decades? More than now? Didn't think so. Now, since 1968 the minimum wage has gone nowhere but down. Did the illegals leave or stop coming for lack of opportunity? Of course not. Also worth considering is this: How much of an illegal alien issue does Oregon have compared to, say, Florida or Texas? Yep, not a lot. Sorry but your causation doesn't hold up. Not even on the surface.

Oh well. We still need to punish people that do not comply with wage/hour laws, worker protections, etc. Yes?

Um, no

Better yet, post why and in detail please. I'm bored atm, and it would give me lots of fun on here to read your explanation of that answer to Gary's post. Of course after I read it, I'm sure either Gary or myself will tear it apart on here like usual. :)

Absolutely. Protecting and strengthening the wage and hour laws is the way to go.

Actually I am not against raising minimum wage per se. It has no affect on my business as all our workers are far above minimum wage and are paid based on things other than minimum wage laws. I think minimum wage can affect some small business...to a point. But since it is across the board, it would all seem to be fair and square. Yes it may affect some prices.

I think it is a fallacy to expect minimum wage to be a "living wage", it is not. Anyone working for very long at mimimum wage, frankly is not WORTH minimum wage. It is also a fallacy that it will ruin business, Vermont raises the minimum wage every January 1 (this change has no affect on Vermont as we have a higher minimum wage anyway)Somehow we all survive

But YES we must make employers comply with all the laws we pass to protect workers or what is the point? Just legalize slavery and be done with it.
