How to Move Money From Colombia to the U.S.

I know this question has been asked many times on Visa Journey, but I haven't seen it addressed by those from and/or knowledgeable about Colombia. My Colombian fiancee received her K-1 visa approval last week. (Yupi!) Now, like many couples, we're faced with the need to move her (considerable) savings from Colombia to the U.S. in the most reliable, cost-effective way. It can be done in stages (and there are family and friends who might be able to help), but I'd like to do it within the next few months and without getting dinged big fees every time.

She has a Davidenda account that holds chiefly CDs and, to put it as politely as possible, the bank officers have not been very cooperative. As near as I can make out, they want to charge 16% on any funds transferred to a U.S. account, will only transfer a maximum of $1000 at a time, and are asking her to establish the account in the U.S. then be physically present in Bogota to initiate the transfer request. Needless to say, that is far from an ideal scenario and, according to my research on Visa Journey and elsewhere, entirely unnecessary. After selling her flat, we will need to do this again with the funds deposited from the sale.

So, I thought I would ask the question of the hugely helpful crowd on this forum. (That last is not idle flattery; this site is better than having an immigration attorney!)

Thanks, in advance, for all those who offer useful suggestions based on actual experience.

Topic has been moved from the Embassy/Consulate forum to "Moving Here and Your New Life in America' as a more appropriate forum in which to receive useful responses. (If the OP would like me to move this to the South American Regional forum instead, please let me know as that is also a valid forum for this question)

“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

Thank you, Kathryn. Sorry for the error. I thought this was for any question to the subset of Colombian petitioners/beneficiaries. I don't know what an "OP" is but if it refers to me, yes, I think responses from those familiar with Colombia would be the most helpful. Thank you again.

Best,

Jeff
