“...Isn't it splendid to think of all the things there are to find out about? It just makes me feel glad to be alive--it's such an interesting world. It wouldn't be half so interesting if we knew all about everything, would it? There'd be no scope for imagination then, would there?”

In the mean time cry more about union members in the skilled trades receiving unemployment benefits. See who builds those high rises, roads and bridges when you have no unions to do it for you.

Non-union labor at an average 20% overall reduction in bid pricing. Up to 35% in some states.

Mental illness is highly overrated. People need to suck it up, and get on with their own lives, without the excuses. This is not to say there are not people with serious clinical disorders, but not all behavioral problems should be solved with a serotonin reuptake inhibitor, or a psychostimulant, as seems to be the fashion these days.

I think it was pretty much said

Clearly we cannot take care of our own with limited resources as long as we have an unstable source of revenue that can be held up by partisan bickering and metered out 2 months at a time...AND we have to subsidize employers exploiting humans for increased profits.

i use to agree with this. after experiencing a close family member melting down & stuggle with day to day life. i don't agree anymore.

i agree. but people who work with homeless populations will attest to the fact that there is a higher incidence of diagnosable mental problems. take for example PTSD among war veterans who are increasingly showing up in shelters in need of therapy if not medication to help them.

for those who can simply suck it up and live their productive happy lives, they probably have little understanding or sympathy) of how debilitating mental disorders can be. it is not a level playing field.

survival of the fittest is great until the survivalists start getting pissed that the not-so-fit are dragging the society down. how can you place the blame on individuals who have body chemistry that puts them at a disadvantage? (though that same imbalanced chemistry has often been credited for some of the most celebrated art/literature/music ever created. )

when you have no means of helping yourself, do you not deserve help?

There is a fine line to be drawn there, when helping people cope with their own problems, without creating a dependence. Is an intervention warranted? Sometimes. Other times, people need to work it out for themselves. It's always a tough call. If someone lying in the street is foaming at the mouth, the least you should do it help them to the curb. If I see someone hurt, I will render first aid, and keep them company until help arrives. When I see something that requires attention, I generally contact the appropriate authority.

i guess i just wanted to make sure that most of us agree that some support is needed by some of the neediest people. i dont know what the answer is, i just would like it to include some compassion for people struggling with a very real handicap.

i dont want to create dependence. it doesnt help the individual or the society. we have a segment of the population that has come to feel automatic entitlement to government/state assistance. but there are also people and families who are in desperate need despite their best efforts.

enter the fine line of determining the difference between the two and doing it in a dignified manner.

Gary, mental illness and other diseases or disabilities of the mind, have NOTHING to do with illegal immigration or the FAIR tax.

Thanks Katherine. I have her on ignore so I do not see those unless someone copies them...like YOU!

But in response I will say that ANYTHING requiring government attention, and that was what this thread was about, the cut back of state resources..."has to do with" the fundamental system of revenue for government and the abuse of humans at the expense of taxpayers so business can make a bigger profit.

It would be silly to discuss how big a swimming pool we want when we have no job and a foreclosure sale notice pinned to the front door. We need to have steady, reliable income and eliminate unnecessary spending

Our Federal government's source of funds are being used as a football for political posturing and our state's funds are being drained to subsidize employers that want to avoid the labor laws we have passed...how are we supposed to help the people that need it most?

The foundation is cracked...FIX IT FIRST.

OMG, you make me just want to scream. You're a broken record!

There's not enough funding for mental health when times are good! The days of the big block grants are gone and mental health facilities scrap and fight for every dollar they can get to treat people.

Trust me, this REALLY hasn't got anything to do with your broken record rants. You are clueless as usual, but that never stops you from typing!

Our journey together on this earth has come to an end.

I will see you one day again, my love.

so while we're fixing the foundation, do we just stop everything else? or could we be, say, priming some cabinet doors in the back yard.

the cabinet doors being of course a symbol representing the mentally ill population. or an approximation.
