Thanks Magnus, we thought about that but he bought his ticket last week and when we looked at it carefully before checking-in online, it said $70, so does their website. F-ers.

I did some research on AA.com. And my wife is lucky. I booked her ticket using my AA miles....I burned 35k miles for her ticket. Her ticket is a "Y" class ticket which means "full-fare in economy class"; also, her ticket is an "Economy class AAnytime Award".

These are some exceptions to the additional checked bag rule. So the wife will be able to check 2 bags for nada. For me, its no problem beacause I always check one.

So, I think we will be ok as long as wife doesn't go overboard. Save your miles too. I lucked out this time because AA screwed me...I had wanted to use MileSAAver miles (15K), but none were availble for the date. Only AAnytime awards were available at 35K miles. So, it still cost me because I was forced to use 20k more miles than necessary.

At least I have the small satifaction of thinking I beating the "baggage rules". In reality, I'm getting nickle and dimed like anyone else!
