Does your fiance/husband not have health insurance?

Why not just look into getting a job with good insurance or upgrading his current insurance?

I was scared of the US system when I first moved here from Canada, and also concerned with the cost of healthcare and having a baby, but honestly, the healthcare in the US is top notch if you have a decent health insurance. Doesn't even have to be the best insurance. I have one of the lowest plans and the Dr.s in my network are awesome.

You say you're looking to save money, but by the time you buy plane tickets back and forth, pay all your K1 and AOS fees for immigration and then apply again for the CR-1, you might as well just look into better health insurance, pay the 20% or 10% that isn't always covered, or pay out of pocket (usually Dr.'s give you a break).

Just my two cents though. Why bother even going through with the K1 if you are just going to move back after a year? Why not just have your fiance move there and then file for a visa after you have a baby?

Good luck with everything!

Doesn't your husband have to work?? I don't know anybody who can take a year+ time off just like that. And you do know that your baby has to have a passport before you can fly to the States with it? I know people who waited almost 6 months for their baby's passport.

Personally, I wouldn't do it. I had to move half way around the world with an 8 week old last year and it was no joke. Also, people always assume that everything will be perfectly fine. What if it's not? What if your baby has medical needs that won't make it possible to fly 10+ hours with him or her?

Honestly, I would try to get better health insurance and do it all in the States. My maternity and post-partum care in CA was FAR from "the bare minimum".

I'll just qyote myself here...

You know, you COULD just get a job with decent benefits in the U.S. And get rid of some of those biased, cut and dried opinions about the U. S. and its health care, while you're at it

I think the driving force behind all of this maybe the right to be home with your child with pay the US doesn't offer this option. Because I don't see the medical/family bonding reason behind it, to spend your 9 months of pregnancy away from the husband/father of the child.

My fiance who lives in Bucharest will not go to the dentist because he has had his teeth drilled on without any anesthetic and thinks all dental visits are painful. I really doubt you would be disappointed in the level of care you receive here in the US. Financially the US health care system may need an overhaul, but there is no problem with the quality of care here.

Hi, I wish you the best of luck

Here are some costs that may not have crossed your mind:

  • You would need a flight for your (1) baby (baby might be free), (2)yourself, (3)your husband.
  • Your husband will be giving up his job or taking an extended absence (I am not sure about the wages in Romania, but you do make enough to support him, yourself and the baby if you need to stay in Romania).
  • Your baby would need a passport to enter the US.

Now I fully disclose that I do not know much about the cost of these things, but a simple google search shows flights around 1k-1.5k per person and adding everything else, living expenses etc, I feel that you could get comprehensive health care for yourself during your pregnancy even without health insurance for similar cost. Most hospitals can offer you a payment plan or a discount for cash or a reduced amount if you pay a big "deposit".

If your husband has a job with benefits you should be able to be put on his plan and get some coverage there as well, My partner's cover is terrible, but atleast it will cover a bit of it .

By staying in the US you do not have to relinquish your GC or LPR, you don't have to go through any hoops to have your baby recognized as a US citizen, you have available to you a much higher quality of care (according to WHO), you do not have to fly with a young child.

These are just my opinions, but staying in the US seems like a good option.

Something's gotta give here. Conceiving/having a child and immigrating to USA are both time consuming and expensive matters and I'm afraid you can't have them all at the same time. If you want a child badly and soon due to age constraints, if you want to conceive it and have it in Romania and if your fiancee supports you in this, I do not see the reason of doing K-1 or even AOS. You would throw time and money out of the window for nothing, really. For your sake, you either come here, get through all the immigration steps, get a health insurance and use the US medical services to have a child OR stop the K-1, have your fiancee come to Romania, get married and take the steps to have a child there. And then, whenever you are ready, you may come to US. Nonetheless, I really hope things will work out for you, whatever you choose to do.

After reading all your posts, I think the best thing for you to do is cancel the K1, have your fiancé come to Romania, have a baby (hoping it works fast), and THEN apply for an immigrant visa.

If you pursue the K1 visa to its end, the amount of money you'll spend for immigration benefits will most probably exceed the amount of money you'll save by having pregnancy and childbirth in Romania. Think visa and AOS fees, plane trips, medical examination, vaccines, shipping cost to send your AOS package to USCIS, etc...

Oh and by the way, you're not exactly "too old to wait 3 more years"...

The World Health Organization ranked the health systems of 190 nations in 2010 France and Italy took the top two spots. USA 37 place, and Romania 99.

Funny enough, I live in France, and I have similar experiences to Agrabs in Romania: dental care and emergency hand surgery without anesthetic... oh yeah it's free. I sure hope so...

Ouch, I just found out infant mortality rate was twice higher in the US than in France. Forget what I said, here they don't care about pain, but they treat you!

I usually don`t like to get involved in topics like this one but couldn`t help it this time.

It`s a fact that healthcare in Romania is waay behind what it is over here but it deffinately isn`t what you`re making it out to be either. I don`t know where you have been and i`m really sorry and embarassed by the way fellow doctors did their job if they did it like you said.

I am also a doctor and did 2 years of residency in Romania before i moved here and i have never ever whitnessed anything close to what you described; if i did i wouldn`t be writing this. I have never seen anyone smoke in the exam room nor did i ever do or whitnes any procedure done without aneshtesia.

And i`m not afraid to go to the dentist either nor is anybody i know over there. I had anesthesia done every time.

Your comment about not having a sink to wash your hands kind of bugged me.

Here is an example of a hospital from my town, does it REALLY look like it wouldn`t have a sink to wash your hands?
