Layovers

You dont need ANY visa for any country as long as you stay inside the departure (airside) area of the airport. It would be ridicuous if air travellers had to purchase a visa for every airport on the way to thier final destination.

That would be incorrect I am afraid. Depending of the country the travelers is, and the country of the layover, a visa might be needed. US does not have transit lounges anymore, anyone who needs a visa to the US needs a visa for transit.

The OP is from Peru, whose citizens need a visa for several countries, inclusive on transit.

Best way to find out: go to Embassy site of country where the layover is and check; usually there is a list of who needs visa even in transit. But, then, why getting into the trouble? Fly direct if possible: Lima-Houston, Lima-NY by Continental or United; or Lima-Miami, or Lima-LA, Lima-NY by American or LAN. TACA is often less expensive by maybe 100-200 but is it worth the risk and extended length of the trip?

Generally speaking, if you need a visa to visit a country then you are probably going to need a visa to transit that country.

Plenty of good links already posted, just not been read obviously

I wouldn't say so. I need visas to visit most of the countries (again, the whole Europe, for example) but I always transit through them without any problems.

I wonder if there are any other places besides Canada, the US and Mexico, that require transit vias that can be granted in their embassies ONLY (not at the airport of entry). Does anyone know? Just speaking in general.

Hmmm. this is interesting!

I have travelled through two dozen countries in Europe and Asia and never was required to purchase a transit visa? Is it based on countries that dont have formal treaties, countries not friendly to one another, countries with high fraud rates, or some other factor?

I agree no need for transit visit...

Geez, why can't people read? How many members are going to post after it has already been established that a Peruvian national requires a transit visa to have a layover in these countries?

It's not as if I and others have just randomly stated that this is the case, but rather we have provided many links attesting to the fact. I could understand if you didn't believe the 3rd party links people had posted, but I posted primary source links from the Mexican consulate in Peru and the Canadian consulate in Peru that explicitly state the need for a transit visa for a layover.

Please stop providing information that is blatantly wrong. Take ownership of what you write here: you are messing with someone's life if you give bad advice.

Are people really just trying to post to get more squares under their name, or what?

Yes guys, thank you very much for all your reponses, I will try to fly with a layover in Colombia, Panamá, El Salvador, Dominican Republic or somewhere in the US, because I havent find a direct flight for less than $1500 and those are the countries that I dont need turist visa either so that I wont have to go and do all the paperwork for other visa as it would take more time and we want to spend New Year´s Eve together :)

Thank you guys!! Hope you all are having a GREAT day today! :)

I agree !!!!

Folks, I made a GOOF with information in my original post (about 3 pages ago!). Several people quickly corrected me on the spot and the issue was closed. It's amazing that people are still re-re-re-quoting my post 3 pages later just so they can "Correct" me.

The conclusion was that many countries do allow transit airside without visas, but there is a significant number that do require visas.

Case closed... Move along, nothing to see here.

I didn't say it was factual, hence the use of "generally" and "probably", like as a rule of thumb :bonk:

Ok guys, it has been established that a transit visa only depends on: (i) the country of transit, and (ii) the country of the passport holder. Also, the two elements are strictly combined (i.e. a Peruvian in transit in Canada needs a visa, an Italian doesn't). Therefore, the best advice is to check with the specific country of transit (Canada, Mexico, or any third country) what their requirements are for Peruvian citizens. Otherwise, plan to travel after new years eve, and fly directly to the US.
