The world map of unbelief

I came across this great map when researching a paper on the relationship between evolution and religion. It is from a Wikimedia Commonspage, and maps the levels of atheism and agnosticism (combined) in all the countries of the world. The map was made by "Phrood" from data in Phil Zuckerman's article, Atheism: contemporary rates and patterns. 2007, in The Cambridge Companion to Atheism, Cambridge University Press. You can download the paper free at the link; it's a great compendium of the world's religiosity.

The Wikimedia artist notes: "The values for China, Cuba, and North Korea must be viewed with skepticism as comparatively little data is available in these countries.

Shame on America: a recent Gallup poll shows that 92% of Americans answer "yes" when asked "Do you believe in God?" Look how we stand out when compared to other First World countries. And a big yay! for Sweden, Japan, and Denmark. God obviously cares more about the southern hemisphere.

The percentages are atheists and agnostics combined; bluer countries are the good ones.

You do realize Atheism is on the decline around the world.

For example Take Russia the Former Soviet Union: For 3/4 of a century they tried to stamp out Religion, persecuting Christians and other faiths by the tens of millions.

They invested heavily in "educating" the people towards Atheism, even converting Cathedrals into learning centers to discredit Religion. (The cathedrals they didn't destroy)

And enforcing laws to prohibit any expression of faith in Public. I personally know people in their 30's who were snuck into church to even be baptized.

In 1876, the Kazan demonstration, the first political demonstration in Russia, took place in front of the church. After the Russian Revolution of 1917, the cathedral was closed. In 1932, it was reopened as the pro-Marxist "Museum of the History of Religion and Atheism."[2] Services were resumed in 1992; and four years later the cathedral was returned to the Russian Orthodox Church. Now it is the mother cathedral of the metropolis of St. Petersburg.

After generations of persecution, gulags and "education"... as soon as the Iron hand of Communism fell, faith re bloomed and is growing at a fast pace.

---------------------------------

I'm not sure what the connection is but if you took a map of world fertility rates and compare it to your Atheism map...... you would see for the most part, the very countries which show "unbelief" are also the countries that are withering and dying by the sheer number of their peoples lack-of-will to even reproduce themselves.

All over these "bastions of enlightenment" (Europe) four grand parents huddle around their singular grandchild.

Here lets compare the maps and see which areas will bring humanity into the future and which are saying Bye-Bye.

You do realize Atheism is on the decline around the world.

I do not think Atheism is on the decline. There is a high correlation between being more religious and having lower education. For an advanced economy we have one of the lowest understandings of evolution. Most Americans chuckle if asked if they believe man evolved from an ape. And biologists want to throw up when they look at the stats because it is humiliating. I bet if you went to 1900 the world had less atheism (as %) and if you went to 1800 you had even less.

Why do only 7% our top elite scientists believe in God yet 93% of ALL Americans believe in God? Smartest = 93 / 7 for atheism and all Americans together = 7 / 93. The numbers are inverse!

When you understand biology (evolution) and physics/astronomy (Big Bang) you start to wake up. The universe is not 10,000 years old. It is 10,000 years old 1,370,000 times over. So the science of the bible is a little off.

Man wasn't born out of nothing. Were Adam/Eve born adults? Around a talking snake? No. It took billions and hundreds of millions of years of slight changes to go from amino acids to fish to land animals to humans. Life has to start in the water. It cannot start in a magical garden full of apple trees and snakes that speak.

It is a fact that is indisputable and if you disagree you should really pick up a book on evolution. It is the most beautiful fact of life.

How can a shriveling demographic outgrow anything?

.... except by importing people who are religious?
