And a thanks to the Airline, they acted very well.

in a few weeks, after she's home - find a hungry lawyer - you've a nice case for civil damages. The copy of the letter was sufficient.

Good Luck !

The next issue will be to have LAN pay for Angela and the baby's tickets. She has a Credit Card but her credit limit is not very high.

Why would they pay for her tickets? It is unfortunate but she was the one who took the photocopy. She's the reason they missed the flight. I'm not trying to be mean but you should try and make sure you have enough money in some account somewhere to pay for the tickets "just in case".

I can't see anything that says the copy of the letter was sufficient. Do you have evidence it is? The original I suspect has secure features the copy doesn't, or at the very least is obviously unaltered. It's easy to fake a copy. Could have just put a cut-out from a letter they received from USCIS in the "to" box and made it look like a legit copy. I don't blame them for not accepting it.

the airline admitted that they made an error in letting her and the baby board the flight in sao paolo and fly to Peru. that was not the fault of the travelers.

That's pretty much irrelevant. She's entitled to flight back to Sao Paolo sure and accomodation/food while waiting. But she wasn't eligible to board the flight (due to having the wrong paperwork) and so would have missed her flight, and would have had to fork out money for a new flight.

I'm just referring to the stress that was added because of the airline's error. being stuck in peru with a baby at the holidays is stressful. being stuck in Sao paolo with family within driving distance sounds preferable.

I'm not at all advocating for suing the airline. im just waiting for santa.

I remember about 6 years ago working for a major US Airline at the ticket counter. It was an early Monday morning and lots of travelers heading down to vacation in the Caribbean. I had a young woman and her newlywed husband leaving for their honeymoon. I asked for their passports and she handed me hers...and he handed me a piece of paper with his passport id page photocopied on it. I gaped at him thinking he was kidding. He said to me, well they say to make a copy for your records I thought it was ok to travel on. Needless to say they missed their flight that morning, he was in trouble already with his new wife, and I spent the next hour trying to rebook them onto other flights (that were overbooked already) so they could get to their destination....all the while the mans father was traveling down 2 hours to the airport with the actual passport.

Its NEVER ok to travel on photocopied documents...ALWAYS BRING THE ORIGINAL!!

There is no suggestion that she did not have documentation needed to enter Peru.

The Airline seems to have procedure for checking her documentation at first check in, as they did not do this they did the decent thing, good on them.

This is totally correct. The original of the RoC extension letter is on heavy bond paper with big obvious watermarks if you hold it up to the light. I made a couple of full-size colour photocopies to carry around while I was waiting for approval, and they are obviously different from the original, wouldn't fool anybody, and could be much more easily modified to contain fraudulent information. [i'm not too worried about that since no one has ever asked me for any proof of status on a day-to-day basis, and there's nothing on the extension letter saying you even need to carry it around at all.]

I wouldn't expect any photocopy of any travel or immigration document to ever be sufficient, just on general principles. Even the paper AP documents, the least secure travel documents I've ever seen, are printed on heavy bond paper and have big watermarks on the originals.

DON'T PANIC
