A California woman angry with her husband has called in a bomb threat to prevent him from departing on a jetliner at Los Angeles International Airport, the FBI says.

Johnna Woolfolk was charged by federal prosecutors on Tuesday with providing false and misleading information.

She's expected to plead guilty during a January 9 hearing, US attorney's office spokesman Thom Mrozek told the Torrance Daily Breeze newspaper.

Defence lawyer Gordon Turner said on Thursday that Woolfolk, who is about 50, admitted in court and to the FBI that she made the call and she now realises it was wrong.

Turner said he's discussing a plea deal with the prosecutor.

Woolfolk is caring for her dying mother in the couple's Lynwood home and it has been stressful, the lawyer said, adding she also believes her husband of 30 years is having an affair and was flying to Atlanta to meet the woman.

Woolfolk called AirTran Airways on November 27 and said her husband was carrying a bomb and boarding an Atlanta-bound flight, the FBI said.

He was intercepted at the airport and he explained he was having marital problems and his wife wanted him to stay, FBI Special Agent David Gates said.
