:secret: biometric gun safe - i have one, it goes from closed to open within seconds.

The safe may take seconds to open when there's no threat, but what about under immediate pressure? Plus there's noise involved in opening the drawer and messing with opening the little safe door. And, if it's mechanical, it can fail. It may be necessary but less than ideal, tactically speaking.

well, i'd suggest the smaller cousin of my favorite .40 - the DP-51

I hear good things about these guns...and they have some wild things you can do with the hammer function I think. My issue would be parts if it goes down but maybe they're abundant. Just don't know.

OK, gun enthusiasts and warriors, what is your recommendation for a 9mm home defense auto handgun. Let's but a $650 cap on the price tag not including shipping, tax, ffl, etc. Not able to buy a Wilson Combat auto for $3000. Ability to conceal carry is a plus but my focus is on home defense.

Best to check "google shopping" and see how cheap you can find it there. It's small, light, dependable and it does the trick. No need to be packing cannon if it's for C&C. This will fit right into your coat pocket.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

There will be no immediate threat pressure to myself due to the canine defenses in place.....that is tried and tested.

The one I have is very quiet while opening and it only takes one swipe of the finger to open....also frequently tested.

And I lied earlier, just checked my logbook, I have a 9mm Italian Berreta 92L.....the compact version.

It's nice but double action.....I like the single actions better. That is itself should be a consideration.

As Gary has mentioned, the other go-to gun(s) are 38 revolvers.....which are double actions and for what they would be used for (for the wife....and for whenever we in Illinois can CC), that fits the bill better.

Phil (Lockport, near Chicago) and Alla (Lobnya, near Moscow)

As of Dec 7, 2009, now Zero miles apart (literally)!

Yeah, I like S&W stuff in general. I think they have a $50 rebate going on for pistols right now. They may carry these at the PX gun counter.

My dad, uncle, and cousin all picked up one at a gun show years back for cheap. They still have them.

Sounds like you have an outer an inner perimeter. Good.

Yeah, the 92 L Compact is still made in Italy. The 92FS is made in Maryland...which is ironic since Maryland is totally against guns... unless you happen to make them and pay big corporate taxes.

only noise it makes is when it's opening - which in most cases is too late for any perp. it has a manual key bypass if there is a mechanical failure (also a battery backup in case of electrical outage).

Under the mattress right beneath your head. If the night stand is right up the to mattress...then move the gun down a bit.

You guys must live in horrible neighborhoods!

I live in a small midtown home, built in 1938. I have no picket fence, just lawn and flowers; my backdoor is cracked open all night so that my cat can come and go as he pleases, and the only annoyances I experienced since 2001 when I bought that home is a couple of Jehova's Witnesses -- young man in white shirts and ties -- who show up about twice a year and want to convert me to Presidential candidate Mitt Romney's religion.

Ahh . . . living in a small California beach town, surrounded by old Ladies in even older Craftsman homes.

Lots of sunshine but no crime. Better than any gun.

Hey, here's a thought: if you put the money you spend on guns and ammo into saving instead, you eventually will be able to move into a better neighborhood and enjoy life more!

There is no room in this country for hyphenated Americanism. When I refer to hyphenated Americans, I do not refer to naturalized Americans. Some of the very best Americans I have ever known were naturalized Americans, Americans born abroad. But a hyphenated American is not an American at all . . . . The one absolutely certain way of bringing this nation to ruin, of preventing all possibility of its continuing to be a nation at all, would be to permit it to become a tangle of squabbling nationalities, an intricate knot of German-Americans, Irish-Americans, English-Americans, French-Americans, Scandinavian-Americans or Italian-Americans, each preserving its separate nationality, each at heart feeling more sympathy with Europeans of that nationality, than with the other citizens of the American Republic . . . . There is no such thing as a hyphenated American who is a good American. The only man who is a good American is the man who is an American and nothing else.

Every firearm I own is for hunting and bear protection (S&W model 500) other than a .22 S&W auto for the wife who feels safer with it when I'm out of town.

I saw a few posts for the Glock 27, that's a .40 as far as I know, not a 9mm. I have one that I customized to look a little better and put night sights and had some trigger work done to it.

dscn0996h.th.jpg[/url]

Since you mentioned a 9mm, my brother has a Sig Sauer P226 that is a shooting machine and I would prefer that for in the house as I can shoot it more accurately than the Glock 27. The Glock 27 is a sub compact and is strictly for concealed carry, in the summer. The Sig may be a little bit above your 650 limit though.

Bad things do occasionally happen in good neighborhoods - just less frequently. Protecting yourself isn't about the odds, it's about what's at stake.

There's a joke about a state trooper who pulls over a grandmother. When she shows him her driver's license the cop catches a glimpse of her conceal carry permit..so the trooper inquires as to whether she's carrying any firearms in the car? The polite granny says "Yes, I have a loaded Glock 17 in my glove box. The cop asks her if that's all the guns she has in the car, and granny says, "No, I also have a loaded Sig Sauer 228 he my console." The cops asks again, is that it? Granny says, "I also have a loaded S&W 38 Special snub-nose revolver in my purse." The trooper asks her, "What are you afraid of?"

Granny answers back, "Not a fuking thing!"
