What is the best 9mm auto pistol for HD?

I have a Glock 19 and it is a great pistol. It ALWAYS works, even if you are lazy and don't take proper care of it. Thbis is not my experience but military that uses it in mud and rain conditions. I highly suggest using Glazer safety rounds for the rounds for defense. They are expensive but, do not travel well thru walls. To be honest, if you really think you need home defense, NOTHING and I mean NOTHING will make an invader leave quicker then the sound of a large dog( which can be a very loving pet and also very protective of family) and if that doesn't work, the sound of a pump shotgun being racked and ready to fire

Thanks for the good feedback. The votes for Glock are piling up.

Yeah, I've heard Glocks are very reliable. Especially the full-size 9mm models.

My condo doesn't allow dogs...even if I wanted one, which I don't. Rational criminals who fear dogs or the racking of a shotgun I worry about less than the full-tilt crazy ones who enjoy being evil and will kill you and your dog.

Since you are in an apartment, I would definetly check out the safety rounds. These are perfect for home defense. If you happen to miss the intended, it will help to keep the innocent from being injured. I always have a clip ready with the first 6 rounds with these in it.

Those were Glazers...yes? Any other identifying info on the exact ammo? Thanks.

Recoil. Recoil. Recoil. My three reasons to avoid 45 autos.

You think there is that much difference m?

I have an Italian Berreta M9 that's nice.

well, i'd suggest the smaller cousin of my favorite .40 - the DP-51

I dont keep loaded guns in the house. They're locked up.

A gun for home defense implies otherwise and this is a particular (and mentionable) downside of this make and model.

:secret: biometric gun safe - i have one, it goes from closed to open within seconds.

I see. Seriously I have had one 9mm, Barretta M9, I figured if it was good enough for Uncle Sam it was good enough for me. Wrong again.

When I do not carry a .45 I use a S&W .38 M642 I find the revolver more versatile in that power range and with the variety of ammo it can use. For apartment use you can put 1 or 2 snake loads in first as "safety rounds" They will not penetrate walls but would discourage someone and probably convince them to go look for a house where the owner did NOT shoot him with snake loads

For concealed carry I drop it in a pocket. No need to even take it out of the pocket to shoot it but it does play havoc on your coat to do that.

Me too, except for the loaded, cocked and locked .45 in a holster on my hip. You think someone is going to play with it? Me either.

Having four sons I can tell you if you place a loaded gun on the kitchen table it would be there in 30 years, still loaded, all sorts of stuff spilled all over it, but never used to hurt anyone.

(I am joking, Alla would never tolerate such a messy thing in her house, she would unload the gun and put it on my desk)

As I said, the people in this house are "gun proofed" They all know how to shoot, very well. Check the photos at my profile. If Alla shoots at you from 100 yds she will hit you in the pupil of your eye. People who are trained and have knowledge of firearms are far less likely to have accidents than people for whom guns are hidden away.

For me, attempting to hide firearms and not training everyone in their proper use is unmentionable.

Yep, my 45 in one on the bottom of the night stand, in Condition One.

The 870 is in the closet at the foot of the bed, loaded, ready to be racked. It has a sling for ease of carry.

Actually, aside from my recoil issue which was 85% joke, 15% truth, the cost to buy 45 ammo is high and the guns are typically heavy with limited ammo capacity. I know for stopping and dropping, the 45 is still king. I carried a 1911A1 in Vietnam and it is a man stopper. Until I got older, I was a total 1911 man. Now I see some better options for old dudes like me that are easier to field strip, cheaper to run, and less recoil to manage. I don't love 9mm but the ammo is abundant and cheap relative to 40 and 45 rounds. With enough hollow points, they're lethal enough to bet my life on.

I would consider an Italian-made Beretta. The fit and finish of the US models are not up to the level of the Italian models, IMO. The main complaints I hear about M9/92FS guns is the safety-decocker is not intuitive in function and they're big and heavy for just a 9mm. But the 92FS Compact is a possibility although I wish they just had a decocker.

I have two smaller caliber Berettas and I love them. Very reliable and accurate.

Correction: Loaded handguns. The (7) that I have are locked up.

Our home is otherwise well-defended LOL
