Hi there,

Just a quick question regarding joint accounts. USCIS say that a joint account is one of the acceptable forms of a 'proof of relationship', but my fiances bank will not allow us to open one, so was wondering if anyone can tell me which banks will allow us to open a joint account (even if its just a savings account) while I am still an English resident?

Any help be appreciated (again heh), thanks

It's not a requirement at all, but may help with "evidence of bonafide marriage" by showing "co-mingling of financial resources"

USAA will allow the USC to add a foreign spouse to his/her account. It requires form W-8BEN.

I work at a small bank and counld add my husband on becuse he didnt have a social security number. so what i did was add him on as "In Trust FOR" (aka benificary) on the account, and it prints on the statment with both names but list him as ITF (in trust for). Cross my fingers that's good enuff. Im going to my husband next month and he's going to attempt to put me on his account. you may wanna try that too.

Are you going to file a fiance petition or spousal petition? You said "my fiance" but are posting in the married forum.

Yes, with "deposit at home" - if you qualify. It's a bank/insurance company that is (used to be) mainly for military families.

Technically, any bank can do the same thing with the form listed above. Most banks either don't know they can or don't bother messing with it (my local credit union's manager had no clue what a W-8BEN was and wasn't interested in helping at all).

One of our members learned about 'State Farm ' or 'Farmers' online Bank, a division of the big insurance company here.

As long as the couple was married, and one of them a USC with a SSN, the 2nd person, the foreign spouse, not need any SSN or even be in the country.

Let me know if you can't find the posts about it; we've a decent 'advanced search tool' here.

Regardless, though - bear in mind that for this particular 'jaunt' - ya gotta be married first.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
Ya know, you can find the answer to your question with the advanced search tool, when using a PC? Ditch the handphone, come back later on a PC, and try again.

I was able to add my husband to my Wells Fargo account without a problem. (Most) Wells Fargos will let you open an account without a SSN.
