COMMENTARY | Attorney General Eric Holder believes one of the reasons why he, and President Barack Obama, are pursued so strongly by opponents is because of race, according to his comments to The New York Times. Even though his interview happened almost a week ago, his comments are being blasted now by members of Congress who are looking into issues such as Fast and Furious, according to Fox News. As a political consultant, I see Holder's statement as the ultimate sign of weakness.

Do not get me wrong; I do believe race can play a part in political pressure as I have seen it firsthand. That an African American is in the White House did not eliminate racism from America or American politics. There is as much racism in America as there was before the previous presidential election and there will probably be the same amount of racism after the next election. The act of pulling the race card is the issue.

By bringing race into his defense, Holder has given people a point to use against him. The race card is being used to trivialize the investigations going on and make them look unimportant. This can either be interpreted as a way to deflect the investigations or as the last card Holder and President Obama have left. Either interpretation makes the attorney general appear as someone who is unable to deal with the politics of an investigation.

The worst-case scenario would be for the Democrats and/or the White House to back Holder on the assumption that race is progressing the investigations. The worst case would be for the Democrats and the White House to allow actions to be taken to bring race fully into the next election. If you thought the Occupy Movement was a rough patch in recent American history, a war of words over racism and the election could be the biggest headache in recent memory.

The best actions for the White House to take right now would be to either admonish Holder for his comments or to ask for him to step down from his position. If President Obama wants the rest of the investigations to go as smoothly as possible, he should send a message that he does not support the race card in this instance. Unless, or course, he wants the card played as well to help his chances next year.

the Ghost of Christmas past needs to take him back to the 1930's Mississippi and show him when "race" was an issue.

Race is still an issue. We have improved GREATLY as a country and moved in the right direction, but to pretend that it's not an issue anymore is naive.

It's not an "issue" as some make it out to be and tt's naive to believe that you can stop racism. You can't and never will.

Hell, the current generation coming up is the most racist generation in a good 50 years. The scary part being is they may not be showing it publicly, but they are showing it within the confines of their clicks and something big will eventually happen... Hell, we've seen it already in these late teens kids a couple of months ago running down a black man... Really messed up.

Society will never 'heal' its wounds until we stop asking what "race" everyone is on every single application for school, work, etc... Race stays an "issue" because we keep it as one because politicians need it to run on.

I think the great Booker T Washington had it pegged pretty good.

“There is another class of coloured people who make a business of keeping the troubles, the wrongs and the hardships of the Negro race before the public. Having learned that they are able to make a living out of their troubles, they have grown into the settled habit of advertising their wrongs – partly because they want sympathy and partly because it pays. Some of these people do not want the Negro to lose his grievances, because they do not want to lose their jobs.”

While I do not believe in discrimantion it is beginning to seem that we need to make a law that ONLY white, anglo-saxon, protestant, hetero-sexual, middle aged males can hold ANY elected office because they are the ONLY ones you can question without accusations of being racist, sexist, bigoted, homophobic, anti-semitic

So the BATF gives more than 2000 assault weapons to Mexican narco terrorists and you think it is racist to ask about it? Seriously? Are you seriously suggesting that?

If that is the case then WHO is racist? The white guy that questions the black guy

OR

the black guy that gives assault rifles to Mexican narco terrorists to kill Mexican citizens and police?

Do we have a case of white men hating black men...or black men hating Mexicans?

Are the white guys attacking the black guys or are they protecting Mexicans against black guys?

C'mon, stop being ridiculous.

How did me saying race was still an issue lead you to assume I'm suggesting all you just said? I just said that although racism isn't what it was in 1930's Mississippi, it doesn't mean it's a non-issue. Racism goes all kinds of ways.

And I'm not being ridiculous at all, quite the contrary, thank you.

Ok, so you do not believe it is an issue in this case where the Obama administration fed assault rifles to narco terrorists, right?

At least it is NOT racism for a white congressman to ask a black Attorney General why he gave 2000+ assault rifles to Mexican narco terrorists which resulted in over 200 homicides including one white American border patrol officer.

Would you agree?

I wouldn't know if the white congressman is racist or not. Do I think race comes into play with this presidency/White House? Absolutely.

An investigation should have been opened regardless of the Attorney General's race, that I do agree with. If it wasn't questioned I would be worried. Every action has consequences. ,

Other than his very election being an act of affirmative action on the part of the media... care to name some specifics?

I wish I could get a job just because of my race and sex.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."
