Yes, I'm afraid it will. If you don't want to be American, why do you want citizenship?

Frankly, in the UK, I was never made to feel that I would ever be British if I got my passport, despite living there for most of my adult life, knowing the culture intimately and identifying more with being British than American, which I am by birth. The British are terrible about welcoming assimilation. Americans are rather good at it -- which is why in general we don't have as many issues with (for example) Muslim immigrants not feeling like they could potentially be full members of society. As an Englishman, I'm sure you know what the lack of this push towards assimilation has done in the UK.

You completely missed the point of his/her post...as in the meaning. I'l explain it in simpler terms. You can stick a McDonalds in London, but it doesn't make it British.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Only if/when you wander around Montmartre in a beret, baguette in your back pocket, with a paintbrush in one hand, Brie in the other, all the while sipping Pernod and sporting a pencil thin moustache. Then you're starting to get close.

At what point is one no longer an immigrant or the children of immgrants and simply become French?

When they accept France's language, values and laws. Don't immigrate to another country if your going to keep that 3rd world mentality. It doesn't bode well with the locals.

one post removed for going off topic and introducing a highly volatile subject into the thread. please stay on topic. this isn't a thread to discuss the life of the prophet muhammad (pbuh) or his lifestyle as it will just turn into a train wreck due to the inflammatory accusation previously made.

Well, many of those Algerian families who immigrated to France, did so, because they fought with the French during the Algerian war of independence and would have been killed by other Algerians had they stayed in Algeria. They were called the Harkis. And the thanks that they got from the French was the French putting them in camps in France and treating them as second class citizens.

Before generalizing about the relationship between the French and Algerians and other North Africans in France, people might try learning their history about these these countries and how the French have used North Africans to develop their industry and to fight two world wars.

Algeria was considered the fourth republic of france and believe me they didn't assimilate...they took it over.

France was expelled from Algeria in the 60s with over a million Algerians dying in their final armed resistance to France's 130 year occupation.

Does Algeria have a lot of French expats that have applied for Algerian citizenship?

whaddya think about a questionnaire, on intake at the hospital, asking about religious preferences during the childbirthing procedure? Muslims aren't the only 'race' with some pointed rules about the birthing of a child, ya know.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !

Most hospitals have that (at least in Ireland and Switzerland), though more in case of emergency if a chaplain needs to be called, and for meal choices. There is also the birth plan (not obligatory, but many women write one- generally more those that want to be in charge though, not leave the man in charge!), which can include religious choices including circumcision, though many European countries will not do a circumcision for religious reasons only, or you have to wait till the boy is at least 6 months (Ireland).

I take my patients' and their families' autonomy VERY seriously. While as a nurse I feel I am entitled to do my job without having violence inflicted on me, I also don't remove their clothing without their consent. Childbirth can be a very vulnerable time for women, and their rights and autonomy as patients often gets steamrolled. While giving birth in the first world has never been safer right now for many women in most hospitals, there's still a long, long way to go even there in regards to the inherent rights women are entitled to in a hospital setting. I think what you're saying is a good start actually.
