All joking aside, Merry Christmas to you and your family. I hope you can spend it with those who are dear to you.

Cheers ! I am spending it in the junction pub in Otley, West Yorkshire where they have stone floors and allow in muddy boots and sheep dogs and hippy poets and ganja. Then for an afghan curry - I tell them my trouble and strife is Canadian so they won't poison us

Also the Black Bull Inn 200 yards away where Oliver Cromwell's New Model Army drank it dry on the evening before the Battle of Marston Moor 2nd July 1644 - which they won.

Then onwards to Yorvik 30 miles away to see the best cathedral in the history of the world (credits to Mitt) and to get a real Cornish Pasty made with turnip and white pepper

I will return in 2012 to repel all repubs and recidivize all rednecks and beat on all birthers and trounce all Trumpites

2012 is the year when over 100,000 tea partiers will die of a coronary event (without health insurance) in November.

I cant wait

yes, Happy clappy Christmas and I leave you with this thought -

When virgins give birth, does it hurt more ?

That's the one.

It says Theakstons but that's a guest beer and the main one is Timothy Taylor's Best and Landlord.

They used to have cows heads on the wall and a badgers back end going into the wall- now its all civilized

It's a low class environment harking back to the starving Irish at the famine time in the mid 1800's who set up a tent city there in the Irish Fields. Still many Irish names in the town. In the first war it was a prisoner of war camp to house German Prisoners. That attracted hordes of hookers from Leeds to service the guards. When I lived there 1969 to 1974, it had the most pubs of any town in England - Fifty One in one small town. It's reputation for hard drinking and loose women remains intact. I like.

My buddies who didn't move out, died in their 40's.

Guy Fawkes family lives there still. He was the Osama of the time and the english colonists in america starting using 'Guy' as the descriptor for 'some idiot'. 1604. Of course they were not British Colonists until a 100 years later. So that family gave america 'guy'

The local landowners are all descended from the norman conquerors and have French names like Vavasour and Du Cannes and De La Billiere De lacy, Percy .. Things haven't changed much since 1066

Now where is my aspirin

Chevin Cycles!

next door si

The Chevin of course is that mountain behind the town

Now here's the interesting thing

The linguists argue about whether the language was already Germanic when Julius Caesar (not the dog trainer) arrived, but CHEVWYN is Welsh for 'ridge' and the ancient british language was the fore -runner of modern Welsh

So Otley Chevin settles the argument - that a Celtic language was used then and not a Germanic one

Then to silence the anti-celts, the Brythonic word for hill was 'DON'

Within 6 miles of Otley is Baildon, Yeadon, Rawdon etc - all towns on the top of hills

So this small area confirms that the Celtic language was used there and it wasnt always germanic

3 miles way across the river is HUBY. 'BY' is viking for town - so 'Hugh's town

The viking area starts 3 miles way and then lots of towns east of that are viking.

Selby, Fixby, wetherby, saxby, whitby, haxby, scarrowby, baldersby and a thousand more.

Its like a line where the towns north and east end in 'by' and everything south of the river is the saxon 'ley' or field

So Otley, Guiseley, Burley, Shipley (sheep field) Batley (Robert Palmer's birthplace) -addicted to love - means Bat field

So white flight and ethnic ghettos are not new...
