Russia has renewed calls for NATO to investigate possible civilian deaths during its campaign of airstrikes in Libya this year.

More specifically, Russia's UN envoy demanded on 19 December that there be a thorough investigation of civilians killed in NATO air strikes during its military operations in Libya, which led to the ouster and death of former leader Muammar Gaddafi.

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said that he believes the campaign was conducted within the mandate, making sure there were no human rights violations or civilian casualties. Specifically regarding the claim made by Churkin concerning the Security Council, Ki-moon said: "We expect the (U.N.) secretariat to be more careful when it passes its judgement on very important issues which the Security Council is dealing with.”

But Russia, China and other nations have been critical of the NATO effort, saying the airstrikes went beyond the UN's mandate.

Russia's UN Ambassador Vitaly Churkin said: "Unfortunately NATO adopted a pure propaganda stand, claiming zero civilian casualties in Libya, which was completely implausible, first of all, and, secondly, not true." He also claimed that he will bring the issue to the 15-nation Security Council on Thursday, 22 December, when it is set to discuss Libya.

On the other hand, NATO has said it carried out the airstrikes within a UN mandate that called for protecting civilians in Libya from forces loyal to former leader Muammar Gadhafi.

Oddly enough the same folks who hated Bush for allowing people to be waterboarded have no problem with Obama taking part in the death of civilians..... in fact I never heard one complaint from the highly principled

folks with the way the Libyan leader was abused.

What roll did we play? These are fair questions.

LOL @ Russia...they can go hang themselves for all that matters. They don't have a problem with whats going on in Syria, and they don't have a problem butchering people in Chechnya and they pull this #######? Tsar Putin needs to take a long walk on a short pier.

"I want to take this opportunity to mention how thankful I am for an Obama re-election. The choice was clear. We cannot live in a country that treats homosexuals and women as second class citizens. Homosexuals deserve all of the rights and benefits of marriage that heterosexuals receive. Women deserve to be treated with respect and their salaries should not depend on their gender, but their quality of work. I am also thankful that the great, progressive state of California once again voted for the correct President. America is moving forward, and the direction is a positive one."

Russia still retains a lot of Power in the UN and in other forums, since we like to meddle in his neighborhood, he is going to try to turn the screws on us every chance he gets.

THe B-)biggest problem people seem to have with him is ... they just don't understand why he doesn't do whats good for us.

He doesn't even do what's good for his own people. He has journalist and human rights workers killed like there's no tomorrow and the ones he doesn't have whacked he has his Chechen lapdog (Kadyrov) do his dirty work for him. Him and his Siloviki KGB pr*cks have bilked the Russian people out of billions using Gazprom as a front. He's going to get his eventually and it won't be too soon when it happens.
