I have a family friend that recently married her American boyfriend while she was living in the US. I heard the strangest story about an experience she had while at the local USCIS office. While she was there, the agent ripped a page out of her passport right in front of her. Has anyone heard of this happening before? Why would they do that? I find it so odd. Thanks all for any insight you have.

Sounds crazy but let me tell you.....I read a lot of crazy horror stories on here. If that really happened...there are cameras everywhere in those offices. They should have made a complaint immediately so it could be followed up on. How long ago was this?

They are not allowed to damage another countrys passport like that. It makes the passport invalid and it is now not usable because its been tampered with. She should file a complaint against the person who did it. She will need to apply for a new passport as well.

She has applied for a new passport and its on its way. I know her lawyer is looking into this. I am sorry but I really don't have all the details. Actually that is about all I know, but I just can't understand why it happened in the first place! Thanks for your replies.

Well, some people just spazzzz out sometimes and do stupid things at work and it appears this employee at that USCIS office did exactly that. Definitely shouldn't have happened and I'm glad your friend is taking steps to do something about it. Most people are too scared of the government and their "repercussions" and wouldn't have done anything.

I have another theory.

The page that was ripped out contained the visa stamp that allowed her into the country.

She was in an interview for an Adjustment of Status case, right?

Sometimes, if an approval is imminent, the visa used to come INTO the USA is invalidated. It is always invalidated with a different stamp, though - never 'tear out a page from the passport'.

Something's amiss. Start with the USCIS ombudsman, you've got a coupla lawsuits to give a hungry lawyer.

Sometimes my language usage seems confusing - please feel free to 'read it twice', just in case !
